Jonathan Tropper can really write. This book was funny, sad, poignant, and ultimately hopeful. Not a bad trick to be able to pull off.

I'll be eager to read more of Mr. Tropper's novels. I was drawn in by the comparisons to Nick Hornby, one of my favoriute authors. The comparison is valid. They both have an uncanny knack for mining the humor out of depressing situations, and for being able to create authentically uplifting moments that steer clear of maudlin/sentimental territory.

I was a bit taken aback to see all the 2 star reviews by my fellow goodreaders. A book that is entertaining, literate, and genuinely affecting, what more could you want? ( )

I was ready to dislike this novel from the first chapter. Two raw subject, cancer and adultery, are called in for a sitcom setup: Judd Foxman, a caustic, self-pitying schlub, sits shiva with his large, tightly wound family -- just as he loses his wife to his shock-jock boss from the radio show "Man Up." The glib, screnplay-ready scenes start with the funeral, Judd's moment of flagrante discovery and introduction to his cast-of-characters family. Judd's prickly attitude can't last, though, and the book's Soon to Be a Major Motion Picture brevity helped me persevere till he begins to address his tangled relationships. The action stays too cinematic, but the underlying emotions finally start to feel right. Once he opens up to his friends and family, Judd eventually will man up for real.

Another Jonathan Tropper book that I want to give three and a half stars to, but didn't like quite enough to give four, so will stick with three, although I do think this was a slightly better book than One Last Thing Before I Go. I wouldn't have read two of Tropper's books in as many months if I didn't like his writing, but there's a little something lacking too. There are moments of brilliance here, and some of the funniest dialogue I have ever read, but there is also so much crass commentary and so many fistfights that I felt like I'd wandered into the men's locker room at times. This Is Where I Leave You also often reads like the movie it's on its way to becoming, and hits so many familiar beats from the family comedy with serious undertones genre (or maybe it's a family drama with comedic flair? Or a "dramedy?") that I felt like I'd been here before, even though the Foxman family's circumstances were uniquely, and often hilariously, their own. There is a lot of heart and truth in the story in the end, and it's definitely worth reading, but you could also just wait to see the movie. I'm looking forward to it, and hope they will be able to preserve what's great about this book. ( )

Adult fiction. An incredibly large serving of dysfunctional family drama topped with a huge dollop of Tropper's biting wit. ( )

Nothing brings a dysfunctional family together like a death. The Foxman family hasn't spent a lot of time together and have been reunited to sit shiva for their father. Sounds depressing but I found this book funny (I had to put it down at one point because I was laughing so hard), poignant and well written. In some ways I think it's a coming of age tale only this time the person coming of age is in his mid 30s. It's been a while since a book has made me laugh out loud and for that I am thankful. ( )
