AN INTELLIGENT LIFE is a practical guide to modern life and relationships. Julian Short draws upon 30 years' experience as a psychiatrist to offer hints, tips and guidelines for coping with many of the problems and events that we face every day. In straightforward language Short explores rejection, family, professional and personal relationships, improving self-esteem and winning an argument, even when you lose. He arms us with the techniques and language to walk away from conflict feeling good about ourself. To feel good we need to act well. We see ourselves in the mirror of other people's reactions and if we want to like the person we see, we need the skills to give and get as much love as we can. AN INTELLIGENT LIFE is designed to show that we can lose and still like ourselves, liberating us to be hopeless at things, but sensational as people. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |

I would like to think that Short's arguments are too simplistic, but sadly, I mostly don't think they are. Everything he says about the balance between the need for love and the need for individuality, and all their implications, rings very true. I think I mostly protest mentally because I love a sense of mystery about life, and the loss of complexity in this book leaves precious little room for the mysterious and the unknown. I guess I would like to be more than the sum of my parts.
I don't agree with everything he says about the value of drugs, but I find the kindly but practical thoughts to be very useful in creating a clear picture and making choices based on my driving motivations. It is the kind of book that turns complex terrain into an easy-to-follow mud map. It doesn't remove the complexity; it simply makes navigation more effective. ( )
