Mullen’s debut novel is as upright, square-jawed and serious as the people he writes about and, alas, as wooden. He has a good story to tell, weaving together the flu epidemic, America’s entry into the First World War and its pioneering history of labour organisation. He has done his research thoroughly and developed his characters carefully. What he has failed to do is successfully embed his work in the fiction. Under siege, the virtuous city — a symbol of freedom and safety — instantly becomes a prison. Step by step, the citizens divide into the guards and the guarded. Outward physical health comes to seem more and more like a sign of inward moral corruption. A progressive community buckles under a double whammy: the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic and the hatreds stirred by American participation in WWI.... Mullen’s debut gets mileage out of the gruesome epidemic and contains some interesting historical nuggets, but it fails to mesh its grim subject matter with convincing individual narratives. ...what Mullen supplies in terms of historical context, he lacks in storytelling; though the novel is set in 1918, it was written in a post 9/11 world where fear of bird flu regularly makes headlines, and the allegory is heavy-handed (the protagonist townie, after all, is named Philip Worthy). Im Herbst 1918 wütet die Spanische Grippe und fordert viele Opfer. Die Bewohner der kleinen Holzfällerstadt Commenwealth versuchen sich zu schützen, indem sie ihren Ort hermetisch abriegeln. Die einzige Zufahrtsstraße wird bewacht. Doch dann sucht ein Soldat Hilfe und wird am Betreten der Stadt gehindert indem er erschossen wird. Der junge Philip Worthy, Adoptivsohn des Stadtgründers, muss das mit ansehen und ist verstört. Er verhält sich später anders, als er in eine solche Situation kommt.
Es ist dem Autor Thomas Mullen gut gelungen, die besondere Atmosphäre um die Ausnahmesituation in dem kleinen Ort einzufangen.
Die Charaktere sind gut und authentisch beschrieben. Zunächst geht es einen Gemeinschaftssinn in dem kleinen florierenden Ort. Doch durch den Vorfall verändern sich die Dinge. Als dann auch trotz aller Vorsicht die Grippe doch im Ort Opfer fordert, zerbricht der Zusammenhalt. Misstrauen macht sich breit und dann wird die Versorgungslage auch noch schwierig. Von Toleranz und Gemeinschaft ist nichts mehr zu spüren. Jeder ist sich wohl selbst der nächste.
Parallelen zur heutigen Zeit sind nicht zu übersehen, denn sonst wäre nicht auf Teufel komm raus gehortet worden. Die einen sind gegen die strengen Maßnahmen, um sich zu schützen, den anderen haben Ängste. Es gibt Menschen, die wollen helfen, aber es gibt auch jene, die in Ausnahmesituation schnell ihre Menschlichkeit vergessen.
Diese Geschichte entwickelt sich eher gemächlich und damit auch ihre Darsteller, so dass es manchmal etwas langatmig wird. Dennoch hat mich dieser bedrückende Roman gepackt. Er ist durchaus lesenswert. (
