The chef and author of A Thousand Days in Tuscany takes in the flavor of Umbria while fixing up a dilapidated palazzo with her husbandâ??includes recipes.
Marlena di Blasi seduced readers to fall in love with Venice, then Tuscany, with her critically acclaimed books about her experiences in those enchanting Italian regions. Now she takes readers on a journey into the heart of Orvieto, an ancient city in the less-trodden region of Umbria. Rich with history and a vivid sense of place, her tale is by turns romantic and sensual, joyous and celebratory, as she and her husband search for a home in this city on a hillâ??finding one that turns out to be the former ballroom of a dilapidated sixteenth-century palazzo. Now I have read all three of de Blasi's books about living in Italy and I am sorry there are no more. Her writing is luscious and thoughtful; her spirit generous and wild; and her recipes enticing. Absolutely lovely all round. ( )

De Blasi composes her stories like a fine meal, stories of her life in Italy and adventures in gastronomy. Each chapter woven and shared. The end of the story is always gratifying..like dessert...but yet you desire more! She writes of the joys of life and discovery. She has a great sense of humor. You just want to crawl into her books and join her. Lovely reads! ( )

This was a real disappointment. I love Orvieto; it's beautiful, set way up on this vertical rock, and it has a fascinating Etruscan and Roman history.

De Blasi lived there for several years waiting for a ballroom to be restored, and doesn't even describe or explore the town in this memoir. This book is about that time in her life: there are shades of those English TV shows about people trying to buy property in Italy (gosh Italian bureaucracy is impenetrable, no one does anything on time!) with little new or startling.

Mainly it is about cooking and food, and her relationships. There's an assumption you've read her three earlier memoirs (I haven't, and it wasn't clear it was necessary when I picked up the book) and she dives in without describing or giving background or context about who people are.

I guess I really wanted the book [a:Jan Morris|13091|Jan Morris|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1284016410p2/13091.jpg] might have written about this city.

Read out of sequence before 'Tuscan Secrets'. Wonderful descriptions of people, place and food. The whole book led up to the final tumultuous chapter, which is summed up in the recipes at the end. Combines my love of Venice, Italy, food and romance into one delicious narrative. ( )

I just went on a Marlena De Blasi book reading binge. So much fun! Want to know what it's like to fall in love when you're over forty--maybe even 50!--pic k up and move to Italy? Author says it is like being 10 all over again. Everything is new. ( )
