This book has been short-listed for the 2010 Children’s Book Awards in Australia. An enjoyable book, ‘Matty forever’ is about friendship between two kids who are a bit different and who lean on each other. When Bill moves in to a new house with his mum he’s understandably nervous about his new life, but soon meets his strange fierce neighbour Matty. Bill and Matty become firm friends, sharing secrets. But when sophisticated new girl Isabella wants Bill to herself (and Matty someplace else), Bill learns what true friendship is all about. ( )

Early Novel. Matty forever explores how true friendships can be tested by unwanted influences. When Bill and his mother move into a new town to seek refuge from a family scandal, they are welcomed by their new neighbours with open arms - no questions asked. Bill becomes best friends with Matilda aka - Matty, and they share many adventures and 'best friend' activities. However when a new girl, Isabella, starts at their school, Bill's head is turned by her glamorous home and lifestyle. Isabella's demands on Bill's time eventually lead to him having to choose between the two girls. After he discloses his family secret to Isabella's family, Bill discovers which girl is his true friend. This charming tale will strike a chord with many children who sometimes find it hard to work out what true friendship is all about.
