NBD, I only want to read it because it seems to praise much the same behavior for which [a:Hans Christian Andersen|6378|Hans Christian Andersen|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1396920989p2/6378.jpg]'s Emperor is mocked. I'd like to see what the difference is (besides that Millie doesn't show her private parts) - I suspect it's simply a matter of context. But, vanity is vanity, whether exhibited by an old rich man or a cute poor girl.

Walking by a hat store, Millie is quite taken with a feathered hat she sees in the window. She tries it on, only to discover that it's too expensive! Luckily the man behind the counter has the perfect hat, it can be any size, shape, or color, you just have to imagine it. So Millie takes the invisible hat out of the hat box and begins her walk home. Millie’s hat takes all sorts of wonderful shapes and colors as her imagination is feed by the sights on the streets.

Kitamura, although not very well-known in the U.S., is very popular in Britain (hence the British spelling – Marvellous) and has more than 20 children’s books under his belt. His direct writing style saves this book from becoming overly precious and instead turns it into a remarkable adventure.

This is a sweet and wonderful story of a girl who is walking home from school one day and sees a hat in the store's window. She wants the hat so bad! She goes into the store and realizes that she has no money to pay for the hat so the store owner notices her and tells her that he has the perfect hat for her to wear. Soon after, she discovers that she is not the only one with a special.

I enjoyed this story and have added it to my favorites. Children and adults can relate to such a heart warming story. To see something hanging in the window of a store and to want it desperately is something we can all relate to. We have all seen something and just "couldn't live without!"

As an extension idea, after reading the story I would turn this into a "marvellous" hat game. I would have the children bring their favorite hat to school. We would then discuss why it is their favorite hat. Also, I would ask the children, "what kinds of hats are the people around you wearing? Are any of them the same style or color? This could turn out to be a really fun activity.
