For the third time in Pittsburgh's history, the Penguins have won the Stanley Cup! Led by captain Sidney Crosby and Art Ross Trophy winner Evgeni Malkin, the Penguins dethroned the Detroit Red Wings in a rematch of last year's final, winning for the first time since 1992. That year, the team was led by Hall-of-Famer Mario Lemieux. This year, Lemieux watched the team play from the owner's box, the first former player ever to have his name on the Cup as team owner. But more than the stars, this Penguins team won because of contributions from everyone on the roster. Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury was sensational at all the critical times, and other players chipped in along the way—Ruslan Fedotenko, Jordan Staal, Tyler Kennedy, Maxime Talbot. If there were two less-heralded heroes in the win, they must surely be coach Dan Bylsma and general manager Ray Shero. Byslma started the 2008-09 season far removed from the NHL, but midway through the season he took over and turned on the firepower, allowing the great offence to define the team's success. And what can be said about Shero? Virtually every move he made turned to gold, from acquiring Bill Guerin at the trade deadline to signing Miroslav Satan, and a host of other roster moves. The Year of the Penguins: Celebrating Pittsburgh's 2008-09 Stanley Cup Championship Season is the official NHL publication celebrating and honouring the champions of the 2008-09 season—the Pittsburgh Penguins!… (mehr)
