Excellent addition to the Sigma Force series. A Native American protest group inadvertently detonates explosives in a burial site, triggering a geothermal catastrophe that threatens the planet. At the same time, the Guild is after gold tablets bearing long buried secrets of immense power for manipulating matter at the sub-atomic level. Director Painter Crowe goes off to Utah and Yellowstone, while Grey Pierce and Seichan head to Iceland and Kentucky to save the planet. ( )

Rollins Delivers Again!

I love James Rollins books. This one has been out for a while, but I was ready for a good old romping adventure, and Rollins did not disappoint. In this adventure Sigma is back again and this time they have to save the world from ancient nanotech bots (yes you read that correctly) which are stashed around the world. Each time the "nano nest" is disturbed it causes major destruction that can even lead to volcanic eruptions. So you can imagine the urgency when Sigma discovers there may be a threat at Yellowstone!

This book explores the history of native Americans, Mormons and the founding fathers (including Lewis and Clark). Rollins does an excellent job of describing the turbulent history of animosity between Mormons and the Ute Nation, and also of how their tales are intertwined. While I held on and enjoyed the fun, I also learned a great deal in this book. One interesting tidbit concerned the actual origins of the phrase "We the people..." No spoilers (it is true history though), but the phrase was not first written by who you think.

Hey it's James Rollins! You know what you're getting into when you pick up his books, and once again he did not disappoint!

Rollins is one part Dan Brown, one part Tom Clancy and one part Clive Cussler. This is the seventh book in the Sigma Force series and another good one. He mixes up a lot of topics and some "true" things into a story as good as or better then anyone. This one has Mormons, Native Americans, The Founding Fathers and Lewis and Clarke, nano technology and volcanos just to give you an idea.

Good characters carry through the series, and there was a lot left hanging on this one so another Sigma Force must be coming.

If you have not read Rollins go back and start with Sandstorm which is Sigma Force #1. His earlier books are alos good and it i interesting to see how his writing developed.

Easy reads, good beach books or on the plane. ( )

The Devil's Colony begins in Kentucky in 1797 at an early archaeological site where the diggers are attacked by an unknown force. From there the novel jumps to the present and takes the reader on a wild ride all over the North American continent as Sigma forces races to stop an ancient technology that is so powerful it could destroy all life on Earth.

The Director of Sigma Force, Painter Crowe, is drawn into the investigation on a personal basis when his niece, Kai, turns out to have been involved with the explosion. The returning Force team members find themselves pitted against their ever present enemy, The Guild, as both groups rush to determine what extraordinary force lurked behind the explosion.

All the elements of the story, from the beliefs of the Mormons, to the Thomas Jefferson affairs and the scientific elaboration on nanotechnology had some basis in truth. This definitely added to the excitement of the book. Rollins also includes a section of notes to the reader to separate truth from fiction.

Rollins combines violence, suspense, superstition, history, and science in a very good action thriller filled plenty of weapons and explosions. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good suspense thriller.

The mysteries and excitement here... like the founding of America, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, the Native American peoples, the Book of Mormon, and nanotechnology are all plots that fit well into the Sigma story that fans of this series have come to expect and look forward to. There is a large number of side characters here that also takes some time to place them in their places and importance in the story. Overall I have to call it a very enjoyable read though it was a bit too long. On a side note I read that it took Rollins 2 years to write this novel...so a well earned 4.5 star rating. ( )
