Zane Grey's first trilogy--"Betty Zane," "The Last Trail," and "The Spirit of the Border"--now available for the first time in one big volume Inspired by the life and adventures of the author's great-great grandmother, "Betty Zane" tells the story of the last battle of the American Revolution, in which the heroine was a young, spunky, and beautiful frontier girl named Betty Zane. The Last Trail, the third novel in The Zane Grey Frontier Trilogy, chronicles the last trail that the legendary bordermen/Indian hunters Lewis Wetzel and Jonathan Zane go on together. I don't want to give too much away so I will leave it at they go to rescue a kidnapped girl taken by a band of outlaws including Indians and a traitor from Fort Henry (the border town in which the story takes place). They pretty much vow that it will be their last trip of the sort together for a variety of reasons that I will not give away.

This novel relates to our theme of who is a hero because simply put it has a hero. In fact, it has more than one. I would say that Jonathan Zane, Lew Wetzel and even Colonel Eb Zane are heroes and arguments could be made that even more characters are as well. Jonathan and Wetzel attempt save the day and the girl yet again while risking their lives to do so. I don't want to say more but you get the idea. They act in heroic ways showing courage and selflessness. If they aren't heroes I don't think I know what a hero is.

Finally I think this is a fantastic novel. While it is not very scholarly or anything of the sort it is one of the more enjoyable novels I have read recently. It is a fairly easy read but the way it flows is great. His descriptions of the vast wilderness, of the characters and of the situations is amazing. All of that being said, I would recommend reading the whole trilogy or at least reading them in the order they are. While they can be read individually I think having read them in order that there is a great deal that would be missed if they were not. All in all I would definitely recommend these novels. They are exciting and fun to read. If you are looking for something to really make you think I guess I would stay away but if you are just reading for pleasure by all means I would recommend them.
