The writings of Thomas Kelly, Douglas V. Steere, and D. Elton Trueblood have become classics. A new edition of Thomas Kelly's The Eternal Promise leads off the Contemporary Quaker Classics. Added to this collection of essays by Kelly is "Have You Ever Seen A Miracle?" and "Children of the Light." In addition, an introduction by Howard Macy and an index make this edition of The Eternal Promise especially valuable. Rounding out the set are Prayer and Worship (Steere) and The Trustworthiness of Religious Experience (Trueblood).Speaks to the scientific skeptic who has rejected spirituality as a trustworthy basis for Truth. For the early Christians, faith in God was a matter of acquaintance rather than speculation---something akin to Quaker empiricism. The word George Fox used for this was ‘experimental’ which is similar to the word ‘experiential’ Friends have always emphasized the importance of the direct experience of God over cumulative knowledge of God. By applying epistemological logic to the many experiences of God recorded through history he puts forward a validation of them and invites us to know a Power beyond that of ourselves which transforms, heals, and sustains us in this life.
