Handler is not amused by "normal" children's books. He thinks that children enjoy scary stories or "unfortunate" stories. In college, he had fainting spells and one day he fainted into a fellow classmates lap (who resembled Wednesday Addams) and later they married. His first novel was rejected 37 times. Publishers told him to consider writing for children but he opposed it because his writing was too dark for children. As a joke, he went along with it and thats where A series of Unfortunate Events came from! ( ) Something interesting that I learned about "Lemony Snicket" is that his real name is Daniel Handler. Also, Handler joked about writing a book about three orphans and the troubles they face, but an editor, Susan Rich, thought it was a brilliant idea. So, he wrote a series about it. "The Series of Unfortunate Events". Lemony Snicket is a famous writer. Daniel Handler also known as Lemony Snicket was born and raised in San Fransisco, California. Handler's dark sense of humor has stuck with him since childhood. His first novel, The Basic Eight, was rejected 37 times before it was published in 1999. It wasn't until an editor suggested he write for children that the though even crossed Handler's mind. Even then, his idea for a story of three unlucky orphaned children was pitched as a joke to prove he wasn't meant to write for children! Handler's charming success story written by Jill C. Walker was straightforward and brief. I think this would be a great way to start an author study in any classroom. A year of Lemony Snicket, I think so!
