"Normal. It's all she's ever wanted to be, but it couldn't be further from her grasp. Dana Hathaway doesn't know it yet, but she's in big trouble. When her alcoholic mom shows up at her voice recital drunk, again, Dana decides she's had enough and runs away to find her mysterious father in Avalon: the only place on Earth where the regular, everyday world and the captivating, magical world of Faerie intersect. But from the moment Dana sets foot in Avalon, everything goes wrong, for it turns out she isn't just an ordinary teenage girl-- she's a Faeriewalker, a rare individual who can travel between both worlds, and the only person who can bring magic into the human world and technology into Faerie. Soon, Dana finds herself tangled up in a cutthroat game of Fae politics. Someone's trying to kill her, and everyone seems to want something from her, from her newfound friends and family to Ethan, the hot Fae guy Dana figures she'll never have a chance with-- until she does. Caught between two worlds, Dana isn't sure where she'll ever fit in and who can be trusted, not to mention if her world will ever be normal again" -- p. [4] of cover.… (mehr)

Im Bann des Vampirs von Karen Marie Moning (flemmily)
flemmily: Darkfever is for adults, and is both darker (violence and othersuch events) and yet fluffier (emotionally) than Glimmerglass. However, both feature plucky heroines making their way in a world that is a weird mix of fairy and human.

I love to read lore involving Avalon, plus anything involving fairies, so I was delighted to discover this series set in contemporary Avalon. The cover and title initially captivated me, and I'm so excited that the book really brought the magic offered in that stunning cover. Dana is so great! She's vulnerable and honest and shares how she feels, and she's funny and sweet. It is utterly refreshing to read a fantasy/hero journey with this kind of heroine. Even better - this is the first book in a trilogy! I can't decide if I want to binge all 3 books this month or save them, but I'm definitely going to dive into the rest with an exuberant splash! Recommend to anyone who enjoyed the Vampire Kisses series or The Folk of the Air trilogy.

3.5 stars. This books was so much fun! Dana was so childish but also mature at the same time. For once, an author caught the 16 year old maturity level of a character perfectly! She had moments where she acted like a kid, and then moments where she had goodish ideas, though Dana's not the brightest bulb in the pack. Generally her "I'm so mature I can do this" moments ended up with her, let's say, kicking someone spitefully in the shin or stomping upstairs. It was so fun to read!
The story itself was super intriguing, though it took me a bit to get into it. A new twist on modern day faeries in our world that was entertaining and interesting.
Definitely want to read the next book and I'm seriously bummed my library doesn't have it! ( )

I wish I could give this three and a half stars, but I did enjoy Glimmerglass, so I thought I'd round the stars up.

Glimmerglass is enjoyable because it is written better than a great deal of other YA fantasy out there. The main character is a special, rare and highly sought after half-breed (faerie and human), but there is so much life in her--real life, like she could attend anyone's high school and fit right in--that such a premise is easier to swallow.

The main character's father was also particularly interesting. Parents tend to be shunted aside or hidden away for one reason or another in YA fiction--such as the main character's mother is--but her father is a fully-fleshed out character in his own right, and it was fascinating to read about his interactions with his daughter. The same goes for the main character's bodyguard, who is also an adult that isn't abandoned at two dimensions.

Overall, I enjoyed Glimmerglass quite a bit. I was relieved to find a YA fantasy that wasn't poorly written and I have already purchased the sequel. I'm going to start reading it asap. ( )
