With a career, a boyfriend, and a loving family, Piper Kerman barely resembles the reckless young woman who delivered a suitcase of drug money ten years ago. But that past has caught up with her. Convicted and sentenced to fifteen months at the infamous federal correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut, the well-heeled Smith College alumna is now inmate #11187-424--one of the millions of women who disappear "down the rabbit hole" of the American penal system. From her first strip search to her final release, Kerman learns to navigate this strange world with its strictly enforced codes of behavior and arbitrary rules, where the uneasy relationship between prisoner and jailer is constantly and unpredictably recalibrated. She meets women from all walks of life, who surprise her with small tokens of generosity, hard words of wisdom, and simple acts of acceptance. Heartbreaking, hilarious, and at times enraging, Orange Is the New Black offers a rare look into the lives of women in prison, why it is we lock so many away, and what happens to them when they're there.… (mehr)

Fun book to read. Enjoyed very much. A little long in the middle, and some repitition. Informative and gained knowledge of what it could be like to be in prison. ( )

Well done, I really enjoyed it - I'm glad I saw the show before I read the book! ( )

I liked the book quite a bit. If you're looking for the sort of drama that happens on the show, you're not going to get it. But if you're interested in knowing what life is like, day to day, at a women's minimum security prison, this is your book.

The characters are interesting - many are recognizable for you fans of the Netflix show - but have very little depth. Piper doesn't have much depth, either, but I found the stories and inmates interesting and enjoyable, to be sure. ( )

Had a hard time getting into it in the way I do with a lot of nonfiction. But it was well written and I look forward to the tv adaptation. ( )

An absorbing, look at life behind bars.

Kerman's account radiates warmly from her skillful depiction of the personalities she befriended in prison

But if you pick up Kerman's book looking for a realistic peek inside an American prison, you will be disappointed. Orange Is the New Black belongs in a different category, the middle-class-transgression genre.
