From the author of the acclaimed Simply Christian and Surprised by Hope comes a book that addresses the question that has plagued humans for centuries-what is our purpose? As Christians, what are we to do with that ambiguous time between baptism and the funeral? It's easy to become preoccupied with who gets into heaven; the real challenge is how we are going to live in the here and now. Wright dispels the common misconception that Christian living is nothing more than a checklist of do's and don'ts. Nor is it a prescription to "follow your heart" wherever it may lead. Instead, After You Believe reveals the Bible's call for a revolution-a transformation of character that takes us beyond our earthly pursuit of money, sex, and power into a virtuous state of living that allows us to reflect God and live more worshipful, fulfilling lives. We are all spiritual seekers, intuitively knowing there is more to life than we suspect. This is a book for anyone who is hoping there is something more while we're here on Earth. There is. We are being called to join the revolution, and Wright insightfully encourages readers to find new purpose and clarity by taking us on an eye-opening journey through key biblical passages that promise to radically alter the work of the church and the direction of our lives.… (mehr)

Some great stuff here. It explains very well the relationship between Aristotelian virtue ethics / teleology and the writings of Paul, and the relationship of works to faith and grace, and why works are still important in light of those things, even if they don't necessarily secure your (already secured) salvation. But it is very repetitive, so much so that I stopped reading 3/4 of the way through, having felt that I had very much gotten the gist of it. I have utmost respect for Wright, so I'm wondering what his purpose was for the repetition. ( )

N.T. Wright is among my favorite contemporary religious writers. This is a beautiful and compelling extended argument for the importance of Christian character, which Wright portrays as the process of acquiring the attributes that help us live a "fully human" life and give us a sense of purpose. The middle chapters were a little dense for an audiobook. I'd like to go back to a paper copy and spend some time reflecting on Wright's exegetical passages. But I recommend this book for anyone trying to live a life of faith. ( )

Excellent. One of the best books I have ever read, period. ( )

Highly recommended! I think this is one of NT Wright's more easily read books. I really liked how gave examples both secular and Christian of how virtue plays into the development of character. He really gets into the nuts and bolts of things. I also like the fact that he rooted his discussions in Scripture and Aristotle. In addition, he discusses briefly how his views relate to some other commonly held views. Towards the end he also mentions some examples such as Rowan Williams, St. Francis of Assisi, among others. It should be noted however that while this book does stand on its own, I would recommend that you also consider reading some of NT Wrights other works to see where is coming from. ( )
