Bennett believes an Alpha would never submit to another Alpha and despite his strong desire to do just that to Marsdon, he wishes to put their past behind them. Bennett is ashamed that he won’t be an Alpha of the pack or a fitting Alpha mate to Marsdon if he ever submits to him again. Marsdon believes that submitting when only with each other, does not change the fact that Bennett is still an Alpha, but he can’t convince Bennett of this. And this is the tension that runs throughout the story, Bennett refusing to submit after they are bonded and Marsdon trying to convince Bennett that he is wrong. I did happen to agree with Bennett on one point, Marsdon called Bennett ‘pup’ whenever he thought they were alone. Bennett hated being called that for reasons stated in the above paragraph, but he was also correct in that other members of the pack would overhear and that is exactly what happened and lead to a challenge from the other wolves. Marsdon shows a lack of respect in what Bennett wants at times, which also contributed to their problems. I never felt that was resolved at the end of the book, it was always what Marsdon wanted without consideration for what Bennett wanted. Sure Bennett was a sub to Marsdon, but his emotional needs needed to be respected and I didn’t feel that Marsdon did that. I like Kim’s stories, but the one thing I continually have problems with in her stories, is that she doesn’t really separate the character’s POV changes. One paragraph we’re reading one MC’s POV then after a short while the POV switches again. In Mark of an Alpha Marsdon appeared to be the character we mostly view the story through. That’s because every time the POV switches to Bennett’s, it’s for a very short period of time and slowly drifts back to Marsdon’s POV and I’m not even aware of a distinct change of viewpoint. It’s like Kim tried to give Bennett’s POV, but Marsdon’s voice was too strong because Bennett’s voice was weak. I also had trouble at the end when Marsdon was talking about control over the pack and trying to convince Bennett they just had different methods of relieving the stress of doing that. Marsdon’s explanation was so convoluted it didn’t make sense. I think an editor needed to proof that paragraph better. I had to guess what Marsdon was trying to say. The ending wasn’t quite satisfying. I can’t really call it a HEA except maybe for Marsdon. It seems more like Marsdon just kept pushing and pushing until he got his way and that Bennett finally gave in because he was too tired fighting his need to be submissive. Despite my love of wolf shifter stories I think this one could have been better written. It seemed forced and the writing didn’t really flow smoothly. The POV changes that drifted from one to the other of the MC's was disorienting so I had no idea whose viewpoint it was. I can only give this book three stars ) Penumbra1 | Oct 11, 2022 | Bennett struggles between wanting to submit sexually and needing to be outwardly strong as the leader of his pack. Marsdon, the 'master' Bennett has fallen in love with, understands this and is extremely loving and tender. The story focuses on the developing understanding between the two lovers about what role submission and dominance will play in their life. The approach is not the 'standard' one and that was the main reason I really liked this book. I can only hope there will be a few sequels... Dominance and submission mean different things to werewolves than to humans. Once Marsdon and Bennett try things the human way — nothing can ever be the same for them again. Werewolf tradition is very clear. The alpha pair is the corner stone of the pack. Equality between the alphas is everything. Alphas mate with alphas. Human leather clubs work to different rules. Dominants mate with submissives. Power is exchanged freely and for the ultimate pleasure of all. Sometimes the most alpha men in the club find happiness with the most omega men. And sometimes the omegas are more than they first appear to be. A wolf might be able to hide his identity and play anonymously in those clubs for a little while, but he can't ignore reality forever. Marsdon and Bennett have lives to get back to, they have packs to return to...they have wolfen traditions to follow. They have just one more night together before they have to lose each other forever. All they can do now, is make the most of it.
