This is very unlike most of Wallace's tales, being set in upstate New York near the Canadian border, during prohibition when running booze across the border was a thriving business. A lively young woman who must must marry before she is 21 in order for her grim guardian to get a substantial inheritance and herself apparently a small one is supposed to marry a very silly young man who is the son of a wealthy citizen and secretly a partner in bootlegging. Instead she marries a disreputable tramp who is being pursued for involvement in as murder he did not commit, and by two sinister men for mysterious reasons. He naturally turns out to be a heroic English adventurer of good family. The style is much lighter than the average Wallace, sometimes approaching P.G. Wodehouse. The plot line of the couple brought together by an abrupt marriage for legal reasons has been used any times to good effect, as in J.D. Carr's The Bride of Newgate and Goergette Heyer's The Reluctant Widow. The story was originally published s The Northing Tramp in 1926.

With tramps, gangsters and English nobility, 'The Northing Tramp' is step away from Edgar's usual setting. This crime classic jumps right into it with a tramp making a run for the Canadian border after getting married in a drunken slumber. As you meet characters and visual various settings, make sure you don't forget a detail because as the plot twists and turns, you'll be flicking back through it to decipher the clever conclusion.
