Craig is the commanding officer of a group retreating through Burma during WWII. His second in command, Ramsay, is killed in a skirmish. Now Ramsay's younger brother is under Craig's command at a cadet school and the drama of his brother's death and who becomes a good soldier are played out. It is written from alternating third person points of view of Craig and Ramsay and I began to see how Craig is not a natural soldier or even a leader, as Ramsay is. But it took until the final pages to realize that Ramsay is too much of a good warrior, that he crossed the line. The Brittish military lingo was hard to follow at first but I finally caught on. Worth a reread sometime.
