Ten Unusual Features of Lulu McDunn wants very badly to be the quirky tale of a whimsical heroine who loves herself just the way she is-- and helps kids to love themselves as well. Unfortunately, it falls short in several ways. First, Lulu McDunn's ten unusual features aren't just unusual; they range from the unlikely (blue freckles) to the unhygienic (a bug living in her ear). Although the artwork is colorful and the compositions are lively, the visual aspects of the book when taken as a whole seem amateurish. The book may find its fans, as the rhymes are easy to read aloud and the author sneaks a lesson in counting into the poetry. But this catalog of Lulu's "unusual features" has no plot besides the rhyming list, and the lesson on self-acceptance is oversold by the extremity of Lulu's uniqueness. Appropriate for ages 5-9, but not recommended for library purchase. ( )

This is fun for kids, silly, amusing. This extremely colorful, clashing, rhyming picture book is a hilarious read aloud for squirming second graders. The odd, self-confident character of Lulu McDunn has ten eccentricities which she learns to love. Meant to give kids confidence in themselves, this book will at least make children laugh and squirm at Lulu's weird characteristics. ( )

Little Kid Reaction: "I love this, mom." There were some initial "ooh's" and "gross" when we read this the first time, but our daughter clearly got the message: everyone is different in different ways. She asked to read this on several consecutive nights.

Big Kid Reaction: This is one of the bet "be true to yourself" books I've seen in a while. The rhymes work and are not forced; the story is clever, unique, and grounded in reality (other people's behavior). I love how positive Lulu is about each of her unique traits. The author cleverly sneaks in a counting lesson, too! I only wish that the illustrations lived up to the story. It seems like they could have done a lot more for the book ... including having "background" activities to complement Lulu's perspective.

Lulu McDunn is an extremely kindhearted woman, who happens to have extremely abnormal and very unique features on her body. One hand has all thumbs and no fingers, and her hair is a nest for many birds. Although her many differences, the children only see her joyful spirit and not her unusual features. This heart-felt picture book is great to have in prekindergarten through second grade classrooms. It is an ideal read aloud book that is perfect for introducing lessons on not only accepting the differences of others, but celebrating those differences. This picture book is also a fantastic counting book, where the reader is able to practice numbers one through ten, while also receiving an important life lesson. ( )

What a sweet, fanciful book. It gets the point across to the kids without being maudlin. The point? Be happy with what you have/look on the bright side. I also think it's a good book to show kids how to treat someone who is different/"challenged." I will enjoy using this book for writing workshops with our little kids.
