Ellie, Lady Elyne de Burgh crew up watching her mother love her father and be devastated that he did not return the feelings. When her mother died, Ellie slipped into the roll of taking care of her siblings and her fathers house. Being engaged to a very wealthy, kind nobleman seems like a very safe, secure future. But Ellie is bored and discontent. Before her mother died, she was adventurous and excited for the future, but now she more or less has resigned herself to it. Until she is kidnapped while overhearing a secret meeting.

Erik MacSorley is the best seafarer alive and part of the Highland Guard. He is a charmer and a 'ladies man' through and through. Usually women fall over him and he is used to getting his way, but when he ends up needing to keep Ellie with him, he takes a liking to the woman who is the complete opposite of what he usually likes. She is petite with a small bosom and a spirit for adventure. Thinking that she is simply a nursemaid, he finds himself unable to resist her, but knows it can't go farther because he needs to marry someone with a title and wealth to further his clan. But when he finds out she is actually the daughter of one of the greatest nobleman in Christendom, he is furious and is almost hurt by the fact that she doesn't need him or his title and wealth.

The story is captivating, adventurous, romantic, and angsty...and I loved it! Monica McCarty is FAST becoming one of my favorite authors! I find that I need to space out her books so I can recover from the beautiful story and allow myself to cherish the story; easily thinking about the book weeks later! I don't always remember books a few days after I read them (I blame my ADD brain and short term memory issues!), but I ALWAYS remember her books for months afterwards.

The Steam
So there was a scene when they were in the middle of a raging storm and Ellie was terrified. Hawk distracts her by rubbing her back and body...they end up making love while the storm swirls around them! It was amazing!

I thought I wasn’t going to like this book after reading the Prologue because it was in the Point of View of Robert the Bruce, after he was crowned King while Edward I was still alive and just after he was once again defeated and in hiding. It just seemed too war oriented for my taste so I stopped reading it. I am more into paranormal romances than historical romances right now anyway. I downloaded another book which turned out to be so awful that I thought, “Wow, the Highland Guard Series was so good compared to this.” So I gave this another chance. It’s a good thing too. It turns out that I was at the end of the Prologue and ready to start chapter 1 so Robert Bruce’s POV was ended and started with the Hawk’s POV which was so much better.

I’m glad I gave this book another chance.

Hawk was such a charismatic, womanizing Scotsman that I couldn’t help but like him even though I wanted to strangle him at times for his misogynistic way of thinking which was just the way men thought and were taught back in the year1306. He is a part of a secret elite team who go on missions to help Robert Bruce. Each man has a special skill. Hawk or Erik MacSorley….Hawk is his code name for the team…is on the team because he is the best seaman and swimmer in Scotland. He’s also fearless when it comes to captaining his boat through stormy waters or playing chicken with the English ships.

Lady Elyne de Burgh or Ellie is the daughter of one of the most powerful men in Ireland who has aligned himself with Edward I. Her sister tells her that since her mom and one of her brothers died two years ago, that she is boring and has no fun anymore. Ellie is betrothed - for political reasons – to an English nobleman who is a widow with eight children. She has been taking care of her brothers and sisters since her mother died and takes life too seriously. Her sister talks her into going with her to jump of the cliffs for the annual celebration of Maiden’s plunge where all the virgins jump off the cliffs into the cold sea. Ellie agrees and takes the plunge.

She swims back to shore via Mermaid’s cave and stumbles onto a group of men who look like pirates having some kind of meeting. One man wants to kill her right then but Hawk, who she doesn’t know, convinces the other man that he will take her out to sea and kill her and then proceeds to kidnap her and take her out to sea. Ellie thinks she is going to die and never see her family again but Hawk tells her that he is just going to keep her for a while and then return her after she is not a danger to his plans. She believes he is a pirate and might use her against her family so she lies and tells him she is a nursemaid for the Earl of Ulster instead of his daughter.

Hawk is meeting with some Irish mercenaries who will meet him on the 13th and with at least 150 men and who he will then take to another location to fight with Robert Bruce against the English. When Ellie stumbles upon their meeting, the Irish leader wants to kill her but he doesn’t want to kill an innocent woman so he adducts her. He gets to open water and tries to sneak by a few English ships and would have succeeded but Ellie jumped out of his boat and starts screaming. The English spot them but Hawk manages to get Ellie back in the boat and escape.

At first, Ellie’s family think she has drown but hear about the incident where the English sailors had witnessed Ellie with the pirates and now the English are out searching for her.
Now, he is laying low on Spoon Isle while he waits out the time until the mission with the bossy little nursemaid. He is used to getting his way with women but with Ellie, his charm isn’t working. She is seemingly immune to his charisma and good looks. He can see the English ships and wonders why they are patrolling so heavily. He has no idea his captive is someone of importance.

I loved how the romance developed between Ellie and Hawk. I thought it was funny how Ellie just rolled her eyes and ignored Hawk's flirting which annoyed the heck out of him. And I was rolling with laughter when he told the people on the island that the reason she was with them was because she fancies herself in love with him and stowed away on his boat which everyone believed because most lasses fall all over him but Ellie was mortified by it.

This author has a way with making my emotions zigzag all over the place. One minute I’m laughing then I’m angry, wanting to slap Hawk for his misogynistic ways and then I’m sad because one doesn’t feel the way the other does and I think they aren’t going to end up together. It’s crazy how Monica McCarty, the author, can manipulate my moods so well. That’s some excellent writing!

I left this as a DNF, but eventually came back to it after readers in my group raved on and on about it saying every other historical romance was ruined for them after reading this one. (How could I not give it another try after that, right??).

DNF- I got a few hours in, and it wasn't *terrible* but I've determined this series isn't for me. This is my third book by McCarty and in every one there's an awful female lead. I scanned ahead reviews for the next 5 books or so in the series and it looks like that's one of the most common complaints in each of them. That's just not going to work for me. Which is a bummer, because I'm interested in this time period and I like the idea of a 'Special Ops' team each with a special skill-set, who we get to know throughout the series. I think the problem is that McCarty tries to make the men nearly perfect, so she needs the women to create the drama. There's a war going on, so it seems like that could account for most of the drama, but instead it's the women, mostly through stupidity, recklessness, and fits of irrational anger. The women are a very immature foil to the Scottish He-man males. Like modern-13-year-old levels of decision making and attitude. For example- This woman has been abducted by pirates. The captain of the pirates beckons her to cross the ship to him, (and is smiling even, so it's not like he's sharpening a knife menacingly). But she *doesn't care to be beckoned*, so she looks right at him and then, nose in the air, turns her back. ... To a pirate captain she just met, on his own ship, surrounded by all his pirate crew! (We know he's the hero and won't straight up rape and murder her for her insolence, but she couldn't possibly know that!) Add to that, to protect her identity she told them she's of the servant class, (might not want to then immediately out yourself as *clearly not* a servant). AND, this is right after she nearly got everyone aboard the ship killed! AND after he saved her from a grisly death, TWICE, in like the past hour!!! ... I wouldn't want a heroine to just meekly submit to everything all the time, (though that behavior would be extremely common for the time period!), but for F's sake! She's *reckless* for snubbing her nose at a pirate captain she's entirely at the mercy of, an *idiot* not to keep up a lie her life may depend on for even an hour, *arrogant* to not be even the least bit agreeable after endangering everyone's lives, and an *ass* for being so rude to someone who went out of their way, TWICE, to save her measly life! I just can't.

Second attempt- lol. It perhaps got somewhat better from the low point where I had left off. Maybe. For about the last half of the book, it was actually the hero making horrible decisions! So, that's mixing it up a bit I guess... Both are noted for being clever people, but actually each of them were quite slow at catching onto some very basic things. The heroine doesn't come right out and say she's an in-law to the Bruce until late, but she does ask with concern after the welfare of his wife and call her "the queen" which at least shows some sympathy to their rebellion, (one does not risk treason lightly!) and later refers to the king as just 'Robert' and says 'that's what the family calls him', and the hero doesn't pick up on any of this! Or, later on, guards *address her by her title*, but she doesn't realize until it's pointed out later that they must have known her identity...? (Poor sods were trying to rescue her, but, *shrug* RIP). ugh. But those sort of things pale in comparison to the hero being so terribly slow on the uptake of basic social understanding (after he's supposed to be such a socially savvy character!). Terrible first reaction after taking her virginity! (But it somehow takes him ages to realize it.) If he were just generally socially awkward, it would be understandable, but he's supposed to be very charming! Worse, when he decides he'll marry her, doesn't bother mentioning it to her, she tells him she loves him and he shrugs it off super callously(!), *still doesn't mention that he even cares for her at all or intends to marry her* and then is super confused when she cools on him! Well, duh!!! Then he gets mad at her for having a secret, (even though he'd had his own secrets and had never asked for her trust, or showed he could be trusted with her secrets). She saves his life and mission anyway, (good on her). Later, she risks her life to save him and his mission, again, (even though he hadn't bothered to contact her at all when they'd been separated for weeks and he'd had a bit of downtime (even though he knew she was a lady by then (whom he'd deflowered) and related to his king). She still offers the blighter her love *again*, -(and he even figures out (then) where it went wrong last time 'oh, she wanted to be loved in return!' (who'd a thunk?!), AND he finally realizes that he does actually love her back as well... -he STILL doesn't tell her! In some high-minded 'for her own good better to break her heart now just in case I don't make it through the war' sort of decision. Bah! Lots of time passes, he ends up regretting his choice, yet still does *nothing* about it, until he's sent on a specific mission to retrieve her by direct order of his king. ...?? Totally unimpressed with his love for her! He's then all shocked and appalled that she would consider marrying someone else, (even though she'd been engaged since before they even met **and he rebuffed her love** TWICE!) But he swoops in, on the day of the wedding, and abducts her to keep her captive until she'll agree to marry him instead! And then he acts totally entitled to her love and the rest of her life and like he's doing her a favor! Ugh. Zero groveling for being such an ass for several months. He'd had potential in the first half, but really went downhill after that. Too bad that the main couple couldn't both be decent for the second half of the book. I wanted to root for them! ( )

This series is so fun and so well-researched! I loved Erik. He did the noble idiot thing but quickly realized he should have given Ellie a choice (and wallowed in his misery for an appropriate amount of time). I loved that he fell in love with her while making it his mission to make her smile and truly live for herself. Although this book has one of the most ridiculous sex scenes I've ever read, it somehow worked. I'm excited to finally get to Arthur's book since there's so little of him in the first two, aside from tantalizing clandestine glimpses. ( )

Loved the setting of this story. The adventure was in full swing. I loved the devil may care attitude of the hero Hawk. I liked the attention to detail. The plot was wonderfully engaging. Thoroughly entertaining.

I really love the interweaving of characters thus far in this series. It is so hard to carry over characters without losing something of their likeable quality. However this book was able to stay true to form. I also love the fictional version of true history and or historical figures. Robert the Bruce and his Highland Guard.

This is the Second in the Highland Guard books. It tells the story of Eric MacSorely, Hawk, and Elyne. Who goes by the name Ellie. A daredevil Pirate like Captain and a lady. She stumbles upon something she wasn't supposed to see. Him unknowing her true identity must take her in order to keep her alive. They fall for each other. While fighting feelings for each other.

Over time they develop a mutual admiration and fondness for each other. She loves his sense of adventure and wild allure. He loves her no nonsense attitude and longing for an adventure. They are both protecting secrets that would unravel their already tentative arrangement. This book is all about honor, duty, and the sacrifices people are willing to make for the good of all. Even if it means forsaking personal happiness and love.

I can not wait to see what is next for The Highland Guard. I am looking forward to the next installment The Ranger. Let's see what else Bruce and his guard get into. ( )
