Genre: Fantasy/ Age: Primary
This book is about 10 mummies who want to leave their pyramid. As they play around Egypt they lose a mummy per activity until their all reunited in the end.
This is a great fantasy book because mummies are not real. But it teaches us how to count and subtract numbers, as we explore Egypt in a fun way.
Use:
1) To explore Egypt like the pyramids and Sphinx
2) To teach how to count numbers (counting aloud) ( )

Ten little mummies get bored so they go out of their tomb on some adventures. Along the way several of the little mummies get lost. One returns sad to the tomb, and was surprised to see all her friends back in the tomb. ( )

Ten Little Mummies, in my opinion, is one of the cutest children’s fictional counting books I ever read. Thus, the big idea of this story is to get readers engaged in counting. The illustrations, the language and writing allow this book to be a good pick, especially around Halloween!

I believe the illustrations and the writing go hand and hand throughout the whole story. Because each one of the mummies possess their own personality, the story line is greatly enhanced. And the humor in the illustrations and writing match up perfectly. For example, the texts writes, “10 little mummies went out to have fun. One suffered HEAT STROKE and ran from the sun,” while the pictures shows nine mummies all playing, one running, one sun bathing, one doing ballet, etc., while one of the mummies literally looks as though he is experiencing heat exhaustion. Another example: “4 little mummies yelled, ‘PYRAMID SLIDE!’ One came unraveled and snuck off to hide.” The illustration to support this is very funny! As three mummies are happily sliding down a pyramid, one looks bare as his wrap is flying everywhere, hiding his body with an uh oh face.

The language in this book very descriptive and clear. Because on each page there is rhyming, readers can easily become engaged. And the language is funny to say the least. There are several words in the story that are larger than the rest to enhance the mood and action of the story. For example, the words throughout the story that are enlarged are: heat stroke, big crocodile, baboons, control, disappeared, whoosh, surprise, etc.

I would encourage all to read this great book! ( )

I thought this would be kind of creepy (and not in a good way), but the kids liked it. ( )

What a wonderful find for our summer reading program because we are just wrapping up a unit in Ancient Egypt! This is a predictable, rhyming, counting book, which makes it a prime pick for new readers.
I put it at level 1-1.5 ( )
