Cheesy, easy read. I think this would be a great first chapter book--My 9-year-old was a bit old for it. We used it as a read aloud and it only took two bedtimes. Wish he would've agreed to read it in 1st or 2nd grade. ( )

Review: Joe and his two best friends, Fred and Sam, are given a magic book that they use to transport them 275 years in the past to find buried treasure, but all they get is in trouble with Blackbeard and crew of pirates.
Genre: Fantasy
Critique: This is a great example of fantasy, because while it still seems plausible, there is a lot of magic involved. While time travel could often be considered science fiction, this book does not use science, but rather magic from spells and chants to go back in time. The are historical elements, like about pirates and Blackbeard, that are also tied into the plot of this book. ( )
