I have never been a religious person so I don't look at the Crusades from any theological perspective. That being said, I have always wanted to know more about them and the role that they play in European and Middle Eastern history. Thomas Madden has put together a series of essays from various experts (including himself) on the background and history of the Crusades. The book is well-illustrated with plenty of images and photos of the historical places to get an idea of the environments. However, I do wish there were a few more maps to get a better sense of the geography of the Levant. Each chapter is written by a contributing author and covers a broad topic. The chapters are subsequently broken up into sub-topics which usually only cover 2-3 pages. The writing throughout the book is generally consistent, although it is occasionally wordy. Not to mention all of the different names and people that were involved in these undertakings. However, this is likely due to the fact that medieval history is not really my area of interest. Overall, this book serves as a good primer on the topic of the Crusades for the uninformed like myself. Indeed, there is no shortage of books out there on the Crusades and this is a decent starting place. It's a good gateway into the wars for the Holy Land and any interested reader would do well to follow-up on their reading with some more robust scholarly works. "The Crusades were a centuries-long series of military campaigns in a violent struggle between the Christian and Islamic worlds. Such wars were fought not only against Islamic empires in Asia Minor, the Holy Land and throughout the Mediterranean region, but also within Europe against heretics, pagans, and opponents of the Church. Crusades traces these major expeditions and focuses on key episodes such as the titanic struggles over Jerusalem and Constantinople. War, however, is not the whole story: the encounter between East and West opened the eyes of Europeans to the world outside; it stimulated trade and the exchange of ideas; and it reintroduced important parts of Europe's classical literary heritage. The legacy of the Crusades is most evident today in castles, churches, and Moorish architecture, but more surprising is its contribution to developments in areas such as banking, science, engineering, medicine and philosophy." "With an authoritative and accessible text by a team of specialist historians, this book not only provides a narrative of the major crusades but also looks at the complex background to events, including the divisions within the major religions - Latin and Orthodox Christians, Shia and Sunni Muslims. Beautifully illustrated throughout, Crusades brings history vividly to life. Anyone who wishes to probe the historical roots of 21st-century tensions between Islam and the West, or simply to learn about one of the most fascinating phenomena of the Middle Ages, will find this book endlessly informative and enriching. Muslimimaailma järkyttyi, ja kosto iti kalifien keskuudessa. Ristiritarit olivat kuitenkin vakaasti vallassa Pyhällä maalla, jonne he rakensivat jyhkeiden linnojen verkoston.
