It was based on a man named Bill "Doc" Key and his horse Jim Key. Bill was born into slavery in 1833 and from a young child he had his way with animals. His main belief was that the best way to teach an animal or make it feel better was through kindness. He showed this when he was able to teach his horse Jim key how to do basic math, identify his colors and the letters of the alphabet. The story to me has a deep meaning, showing that animals are smarter then people tend to give them credit for and that no matter what background you are born in, you can always make a name for yourself. The illustrations in this book were wonderfully done, and represented the nineteenth century perfectly. This story also shows younger children that it is not okay to abuse animals, and if they are treated with kindness they may become very educated. This story also provides somewhat of a history lesson as it is a fictionalized retelling of Bill Key. This is about a man who made it out of slavery. He became rich and bought a horse who had a foal. The foal could not race, so he taught the horse to do many other things such as, spell, know colors, do arithmetic, dance, and more. It came about that many people thought that it was a hoax. They said that a black man could not teach a stupid horse. He proved everyone wrong when he had Harvard scholars prove them wrong. The pretty much lived happily ever after. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Performing in shows across the country, Jim stunned audiences with his incredible skills. But when some people called Jim a fake, Doc set out to prove them wrong and to show the world that, thanks to the power of kindness and patience, Jim was truly a wonder horse.
