Picked this up at a Friends of the Chestnut Hill Library sale, monthly because javaczuk was fascinated by the title. Now I wish Schemata was a real graphic novel, so I could read it.

2021 pandemic resurgence/Delta variant read. (Please wear a mask, get vaccinated, and stay safe.) ( )

I picked this up after reading "Never Let Me Go" seeing as I was in need of an easier and more light-hearted read. The narrator is a very believable one, and the tone is cynical enough to be enjoyable without growing old over the course of the book. The many references to comics (so much Alan Moore) was smirk-worthy to anyone who has indulged in graphic novels in their time. Overall, it is a bit of a darker story than I was expecting, but was no less enjoyable for that tone.

The ending was satisfactory, and the evolution of the main character was gratifying to see. It dealt with more issues than I would really expect of a YA book, but was very comforting in that it didn't drive home to 'dear lord you need other people' theme that has been cropping up a good deal in this category of literature. Definitely would recommend it if anyone else I know is in need of some light comfort reading. I'll be seeking out more of Lyga's books for sure. ( )

This book just left me feeling kind of flat. The writing wasn't bad but I don't feel compelled to rush out and grab another [a:Barry Lyga|150484|Barry Lyga|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1377633201p2/150484.jpg] book. The book definitely addresses some of the major issues facing teens: fitting in, bullying, divorce, geeks vs. jocks, individuality, friendships, insensitive adults, and the list goes on. So really every teen can identify with something in the book. Maybe there was just too much hardcore teen reality for me and not enough sunshine and rainbows.

A quick description of the main characters.

Goth girl takes pictures of Fanboy being pummeled in gym class then befriends him and proceeds to lecture him about every thought he or she has ever had. She thinks she has life figured out and is pretty intolerant of anyone who doesn't take immediate action on her advice.

Fanboy is ultra smart, but not popular. He has a lot of inner turmoil, mostly because he never stands up for himself. He's a comic book nerd who is working on his own secret graphic novel, which he thinks is going to be his salvation. He has a lot of not so good things to say about school and parents, but surprisingly most of it is true.

Although the majority of the book was a downer for me because of all the negativity, it does end on a positive note when Fanboy realizes that he, not others, have been holding him back. In the last few chapters he finally turns the table on the bullies and crappy adults and we're left with a sense that the rest of high school is going to go pretty well for him. ( )

I don’t know what I was expecting with this book. But, what I got was an amazing story of two outsiders. It takes me back to high school and some of my experiences. They touch on everything from bullying, sex, love, self harm and suicidal thoughts. I cannot believe this is a first novel. I love Barry Lyga. I am hooked and I will read more by him. I just have to.
