Northern Exposure

Even in Grundy, Alaska, it's unusual to find a naked guy with a bear trap clamped to his ankle on your porch. But when said guy turns into a wolf, recent southern transplant Mo Wenstein has no difficulty identifying the problem. Her surly neighbor Cooper Graham--who has been openly critical of Mo's ability to adapt to life in Alaska--has trouble of his own. Werewolf trouble.

For Cooper, an Alpha in self-imposed exile from his dysfunctional pack, it's love at first sniff when it comes to Mo. But Cooper has an even more pressing concern on his mind. Several people around Grundy have been the victims of wolf attacks, and since Cooper has no memory of what he gets up to while in werewolf form, he's worried that he might be the violent canine in question.

If a wolf cries wolf, it makes sense to listen, yet Mo is convinced that Cooper is not the culprit. Except if he's not responsible, then who is? And when a werewolf falls head over haunches in love with you, what are you supposed to do anyway? The rules of dating just got a whole lot more complicated. . . .

I'm a big fan of Harper's Jane Jameson books, which are about vampires moreso then werewolves, so immediately the quirky fun look to the cover caught my attention. It also perked my interest to read about a thoroughly Southern climate gal moving to a very Northern climate.

This isn't a perfect book; there are quite a few things that Harper waves the magic 'grew up unconventionally' wand at to explain why Mo coped so easily. And the fact the culprit behind the wolf attacks (we all know its not Cooper) has a rather uninspired reasoning.

What I did like, and was refreshing to read in a paranormal romance, was that Harper didn't have Mo rhapsodizing on the virtues of Cooper from the get-go. She acknowledged that she was attracted to him, that some bedroom fun would be absolutely stunning, but she also understood that she didn't know him, didn't trust him and he was obviously a 'bad boy'. Mo didn't let the fact his kisses turned her knees to jelly interfere with the fact she was trying to build a life for herself.

Mo built herself, mostly by accident at first and then later through her own skills, a life she was happy with. She found a job she enjoyed, a group of people she was comfortable with and a town she wanted to know better. I enjoyed reading about how Mo was herself and by doing so built a place for herself in the community. The gradual shift from 'Mo the Hot New Outsider' to 'Mo the Hot Cook' was steady.

When their relationship did take off--oh man. It was like zero to sixty in a nanosecond. Cooper is an alpha werewolf and Mo knows what she wants, the two of them together didn't mess around with games or being coy. They were upfront with each other about what they wanted (lots of sex) and instinctively seemed to know when to push and when to pull back on the personal front.

I never got a real feel for Mo's parents. She talks about them, and they'll occasionally call and talk, but other then the outlandish stories Mo told, they were very two-dimensional to me. Extreme Hippies is what they are and by the end they sort of mellow out. The longer phone chat Mo and her parents, Ash and Saffron, have in the last third of the book was kind of hilarious...but also very out of left field. Maybe because the book focused on Mo, hearing about a huge life-changing alteration in her parents lives felt less important.

Cooper's family on the other hand was filled with a bunch of intriguing characters and I think its when Mo shined the best when dealing with them. Cooper's sister Maggie in particular was...rough and hard to like. Incidentally the second book, The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf comes out in March and is about Maggie. I sincerely hope she's got an attitude adjustment, I'm not sure I could deal with how insane she was for an entire book.

All in all this was a fluffy, fun read. The mystery portion of the book was mostly a device to make Cooper angst and the dark scene involving Mo and a late night incident was dealt with delicately and with a lot of tact. I'm interested to see how Maggie is in the next book, the description is a spoiler for the end of this one (for a number of reasons), but I wonder at how long after its set from this one? ( )

Nothing special but still a cute if badly a bit clichéd romance story.
It's a simple and mostly wholesome romance story with a bit of the MINEs.
The humour falls a bit flat at times because it feels a bit forced but I still had quite a few good laughs.
The plot-twist was predictable from a mile away but I don't think that's a big issue as that's not why one reads these kinds of books. ( )

I accidentally stumbled across this book as a local discount store and the cover instantly caught my eye. I kept eying this book down, knowing full well I needed to pick it up, and I finally caved. To no one's surprise, I have been eying this cutesy romance on my book shelf for AGES and I finally knew it was time to pick it up. Nothing is better than my guilty pleasure - romances with a pinch of fantasy!

How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf follows our lead Mo when she moves to a distant, small town in Alaska. She wants to get away from her parents overly obsessive nature of basically controlling her life. It's like this move was meant to be, because suddenly she has friends and a job, and a hot man chasing after her. One day, sexy Cooper wakes up naked on her door step, and guess what? He's the naked werewolf! But is he the werewolf/creature killing the people showing up dead in their town? Mo and Cooper will have to investigate. Will their relationship survive? You'll need to read to find out...

This book was super funny and an absolute delight. I felt myself sinking into this book and disappeared until I have binged the whole thing. It really is a lovely, HEA type romance with just enough fantasy and paranormal in it to make it interesting. I really enjoyed watching Mo develop relationships and finally fit in somewhere. It's what every reader seems to want - just to fit in - so it was easy to relate to her. I really liked Mo's arc and that quite a few characters developed over time and became more likable. Also, Mo is thirty years old! Do you know how great it is to see a romance book where the character is an actual ADULT who doesn't have her life figured out yet? RELATABLE. SUPER RELATABLE. THANK YOU!

Cooper is a more rough character and maybe not the most romantic of men, but I didn't care. I was more focused on the fun Mo was having and the amazing sex scenes those two were romping in. This book is also a wee bit predictable, but that's what I like in my guilty pleasure reads. Anywho, it seems like every plot has been done to death anyways.

There was a few "rougher" parts of this book - brutal death of a character who deserved some bad things to him, and a really sad loss - but other than that it's a great contemporary, paranormal romance. I honestly don't see anything bad with it because any "issues" that were there were so minor it didn't matter. Sooner or later, I will need to find the remaining books in this series and binge it. Molly Harper is gearing up to be one of my new fave authors.

Overall, I loved this book! It's sweet, light, full of romance, funny, mushy, sexy and just a great all around read!

Four out of five stars. ( )
