"Though we have encountered our share of grief and troubles on this earth, we can still hold the line of beauty, form, and beat. No small accomplishment in a world as challenging as this one." So writes Alice Walker in this new book of poems, poems composed over the course of one year in response to joy and sorrow both personal and global: the death of loved ones, war, the deliciousness of love, environmental devastation, the sorrow of rejection, greed, poverty, and the sweetness of home. This will certainly not be everyone's favorite. That being said, this is an outstanding collection of poems! If you enjoy Alice Walker's work, READ THIS. ( )

There were a few poems - 3 or 4 - and parts of others that touched me. That felt real and full and like they had something to say that was relevant and big, big in a way that slid and snaked its way through language the way the best poetry does. And then others - most of the others - felt flat and contrived and childish. Which, reading the supporting material for the main event, seems like it might be where Walker is at these days. I'm by no means an expert on her writing but was certainly disappointed by this collection. ( )
