La ilustre peregrina, perteneciente a la alta sociedad, culta y dotada de cualidades literarias, dejó constancia por escrito de su periplo, y ese relato se ha convertido en una obra de gran valor filológico, geográfico y litúrgico. Aunque el "Itinerarium Egeriae" ha sido publicado en varias ocasiones y traducido a diversas lenguas, esta edición, precedida por una documentada introducción de Agustín Arce, se caracteriza por el rigor crítico y por venir acompañada de algunos textos auxiliares que permiten conocer mejor una de las obras maestras, única en su género, de la antigüedad cristiana.
