Kurzbiographie
Tony Angell has authored and/or illustrated a dozen award-winning books related to natural history. Most recently, his drawings in the coauthored book In the Company of Crows and Ravens received the prestigious Victoria and Albert Museum illustration prize. Angell's artwork also include both stone and bronze sculptures, which are the basis for his one-man shows and retrospectives that he has regularly had over the past forty years. His works are continuously available at galleries in Seattle and Santa Fe and are included in several museum and corporate collections throughout the country, including the Gilcrease Museum of Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Frye Art Museum of Seattle, and the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming. He has served as chairman and regular board member of Washington State's chapter of the Nature Conservancy, and for his work in conservation he received the Nature Conservancy's highest award, the Gold Oakleaf from the national office as well as the Finestone Award from New York University at Stonybrook. For more than thirty years, Angell supervised the State Office of Environmental Education in Washington and developed a wide range of information and curriculum related to a broad spectrum of environmental issues. Angell is an elected member of the American Ornithologist's Union and an elected fellow of the National Sculpture Society and the Explorers Club. [from Gifts of the Crow (2012)]

Rezensionen

I really enjoyed this book, which has both good scientific information from crow studies and fun anecdotes. The studies and anecdotes provided evidence of the wisdom of crows and their kin. It’s unfortunate that the author was so uncomfortable relaying the anecdotes. It forced him to repeatedly state hypotheses and then go through the likely physical processes that led to whatever behavior he was describing. As many of the same hormones and pathways were involved, it bacme somewhat repetitive. The author did a separate appendix with diagrams and further information.
All in all, a really good read

Both a personal account of the author's experiences with North American owls, and a nice synopsis of their habits and life histories. Accompanied by many of Angell's own illustrations of different owls.

Crows and other corvids are the smartest of all birds. This book is well written but has a lot of details about neurobiology that would be only of interest to some.

A wonderful book about some wonderful creatures. Lots of pretty drawings. Great stories about crow behavior and its similarities with our own behavior. I skipped over some of the nitty gritty specifics on corvid brain structures.
