A while back, we discussed doing a group read of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. We had mentioned doing it in conjunction with the folks over at The Green Dragon, but I'm not entirely sure how we were going to work that, since the threads have to live in one group or the other. Also, I felt like I ought to see about getting the thread started, if we're going to do this. Of course, our Green Dragon friends are always welcome to participate!

This is the startup/spoiler-free thread. Feel free to share if you've read the book before or not, etc., and any thoughts or questions you have going in to the story. Also, do we want one spoilery thread for discussing the book, or would it be better to break it up into chapters?

I read the book along, long time ago. Decades, even. I'm now reading it to my 7 year-old daughter in preparation for the movie release. I'm enjoying it more the 2nd time around. I always enjoy reading aloud well written books. The words simply flow off the tongue.

Starring this topic.  I love the audio book with Rob Inglis narrating.

Have read several times. It's a short (ish) book and breaking into chapters might be too bity. But you could break it into sections maybe?

Whenerv you're ready to start the thread, just post in GD with a link. Those that are interested will come over. It's not hard!

OMG, I completely forgot about the shared read.
:o(
I guess we'll just have to hop back and forth from group to group.

I have had such good intentions to do a reread of this, and time has just gotten away from me. I think I'm going to wait until after seeing the movie to do my reread, anyhow, as I tend to enjoy movies better if the book they're based on is not fresh in my memory!

#7: That's what I ended up deciding too. Knowing that they split the book into 3 movies, I decided it would be best to go in with only vague memories of events. (It's been about 11 years since I last read it.)

I'd say that's a wise choice. :o)

I'd love to participate in a 2013 Group Read because I love re-reading the book either on a yearly or at least every other year basis. I've read The Hobbit 4 times in the last 5 years & I can verify reading it a total of 10 times in all. Although I have to admit since I'm missing a lot of my records for the Books I read on a yearly basis the number of times for having read The Hobbit could even be higher. Even if we don't have a Group Read in 2013 I still plan on reading The Hobbit & LOTR as well. In the last five years the only one I failed to read The Hobbit in was 2011.

On Monday I finished reading The Hobbit for the fifth time in the last six years. And I'm ready to start reading The Lord of The Rings The Fellowship of The Ring. Right now I'm reading
The Barbarian Princess by Laura Buchanan and The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice.

I've listened to the Rob Inglis audio book many times.  However, after seeing Peter Jackson's Hobbit, I want the composers of "Misty Mountain" to do ALL of the poems/songs that Tolkien wrote.
