You can edit your titles if you want to get rid of the Amazon additions. You can also use other sources if you want to avoid that. OverCat os a good source because it is all data from libraries.

Another hint: It's usually a good idea to avoid Amazon covers. They can change or disappear. Member covers are on LT servers so they stay.

What is the significance of the note: "There is another version of this work in Your books"? Is there anything needs to be done about it? I'm just adding periodicals with the same title but with additional, obviously different volume numbers.

>4 Buchmerkur: That means the system has determined the most recent entry is the same as one of your previous entries. You'll probably need to go to the first magazine entered and separate out each of the various volumes.

You do that from the editions page, reached through the left hand menu on a work/book page.

This happens because the computer looks at the first 20 characters of the title or to the first colon, whichever comes first. It's easy enough to fix.

You might find this page useful:

https://www.librarything.com/stats/Buchmerkur/workdups

(Charts and graphs> Odds and Ends>Work Duplicates)

In some cases someone would want work duplicates. For examples there are several works where I have copies in both English and German. On the other hand, one of the most frequent causes for there to be "duplicates" is that Volume 1 and 2 have been combined and need to be separated.

>5 gilroy: thank you, gilroy; but I think, the system is wrong. It highlights the same content, but once I open it, it shows the corect volume. I entered for example the six distinguished volumes for Sinn und Form 2023 as /1 ... /6 and the according different ISBNs. Yet it counts as six times 2023/1.

>8 Buchmerkur: The system was correct - it was just not showing what you thought it does.

The 6 issues were caught in the same work - so they appeared to be the same book for the system. That was incorrect (the algorithm is overzealous sometimes, especially with magazines) but it happens as >6 MarthaJeanne: and >7 MarthaJeanne: explained above. When it happens, we separate them out so they can form their own works.

If you look now, you should see them as separate :)

That touchstone is not for your copy.

Sinn und Form 2023

>7 MarthaJeanne: thank you, MarthaJeanne. That link is intruiging, but it doesn't help with soving the conundrum, as it seems.
"...causes for there to be "duplicates" is that Volume 1 and 2 have been combined and need to be separated." I tried that with indicating volumes and adding proper ISBNs, in vain.

e.g. Das Evangelium der Bauern von Solentiname
Band 1 : 3579037420
Band 2 : 3579003496
Band 3 : 3579010050
Band 4 : 3579010182

Once they have been combined, they have to be separated. Changing the data will not do that. I have now separated that particular work. You have to separate them on the editions page.

>11 Buchmerkur: LT works on the principle of works - all versions of the same book (formats, languages and so on does not matter) get combined. So when you are adding a book (manually or from a source - it does not make a difference) the algorithm tries to do that when you add a book - and sometimes it gets a bit confused. When that happens, no amount of edits will fix it - they need to be manually separated. Same applies in the other direction - if they do not get combined on adding, they need to be manually combined when the algorithm misses to connect them.

I separated quite a few volumes from the Sinn und Form magazines so these should look better in your catalog now.

If you add a lot of journals/magazines, you will see that happening. Easy enough to fix and anyone can do it :)

PS: Next step - you may want to create a series for Sinn und Form :)

thank you everybody. By and by I shall get used to the tricks of the trade. Please beare with me.

Regarding series: is it possible to distinguish single volumes. The series isn't complete; and there are volumes I read and others I didn't.

Well, for today I call it a day. Everybody a happy bookish week - and maybe some hidden Easter eggs ;-) .
