An American Soldier: Letters of Edwin Austin Abbey, 2d von Edwin Austin Abbey
A good collection of candid letters from an American who joined the British Army (via Canada) to fight in World War I before the Americans joined the war. Chronologically, the letters start as Abbey is working in Canada, then joins the war effort. The reader follows Abbey through the trenches in France and while he is on leave. They end when the reader learns that Abbey was killed in action at Vimy Ridge in France in 1917.
