I liked the premise of this book. I felt that the characters changed too quickly and that the author could have added more “meat” to make the change a smoother, more realistic turn of events. I love how in the end Emily comes to know God. My 5th grader enjoyed the book, her name is Emily, though I did have to explain what Munchausen was.

I really like the premise of this book. It sounded like it would be a story about family relationships and how they changed for the better over time, and it was, up to a point. There was a lot of teenage girl angst followed by a complete attitude turn around. I felt the book was more of a really great outline or initial write up for a more robust and developed story. The characters were interesting and believable as was the situation they found themselves in, although I would have liked to know more of the backstory. Character attitudes changed so fast, almost as if flipping a switch and there was not the realistic timing in the character development I like to see, especially in this type of story. For me this book was a bit controversal. We got a really religious family with an abusive mother, where the kids needed to go live with their Aunt and her family. Stacey talks about the Bible, church and how to behave, but instead of following those rules she just arrives to her relatives and being mean. Of course she’s been through a lot, and she needs to deal with it, but somehow I couldn’t relate to her. After Emily talked with Stacey, she changed and got more cooperative with the family, friendlier and more understanding. However I liked the way how the author made Emily meet God, and find her own faith and peace in Him.… (mehr)
