Kurzbiographie
Tundra author Judy Andrekson grew up in Nova Scotia with a pen in one hand and a lead rope in the other. At the age of twenty, she moved to Alberta, where she could pursue her great love of horses, and there she found her dream job managing a thoroughbred racing/breeding farm. By her thirties, Judy had also begun to write seriously. Now she combines both of her passions in her new series for young readers, True Horse Stories. Judy also works as an educational assistant. She, her husband, John, and their daughter, Kate, live in Sherwood Park, Alberta, along with a constantly changing assortment of animals.

Miskeen is a little horse rescued in Bahrain from a Russian travelling circus. The story of his early life is based on speculation and memory. His treatment is said to be typical of many small circuses in eastern Europe and the Middle East. Miskeen's story after being rescued by an English woman, Vicky Malia, is true. Andrekson does not offer her opinion of how Miskeen was treated. The Russian circus workers were not accused of any wrongs, in their own way they looked after the animals. However, the message was clear. This YA book will have appeal with all young people who are interested in animal welfare.… (mehr)

I received this book for LT's Early Reviewers. I think people like my mother (who was really into horses when she was growing up) would absolutely love this book. It is intended for 8 to 12 year olds in my opinion. Personally I loved the weather descriptions the best, as well as Gunner's interactions with Heather's little son. The descriptions of training and showing got a little long. It is a very quick read.

An amazing true story about a horse who turns hero. This book takes the journey from the beginning of how the Brigadier was discovered, how he was trained and how he was matched with his "partner". It continues through his amazing career to his tragic end.

This book will leave you both amazed and heartbroken. It is a tragic story, but one that should be told and known. This is targeted towards a young audience, but be aware that it is tragic. For that reason, I would advise parents to read it before their child.… (mehr)

I wasn't ready for this book - I thought that this would be a light, fast read. This idea was reinforced by the illustrations and the short length of the book. I enjoyed the story very much. I found the descriptions of the world of training and showing horses to be accurate and interesting without getting too involved. I found myself laughing and crying. I had no idea that the story would take ahold of my heart the way it did. I was not prepared for the end of the story and the dedication. It's a great read - be ready with the tissue.… (mehr)
