I was really looking forward to this one, as I'm also suckered in by stories about twins. And the mystery sounded fascinating as well. Sadly, I only read 4% in and was turned off by both the trope of the Southern snake-oil preachers who 'believe in God over science' and Tara's work with 'marginalized LGBT teens' and a 'trans boy'.

The author, and the characters, are, of course allowed to make whatever choices they want, with no judgement from me. But there are some things I just don't choose to read about. Moved on pretty quickly from this one.… (mehr)

Disturbing, Dark, (Mostly) Delicious Drama. Ok, I gotta put this up front: This book has both rape *and* child molestation "on screen". It works within the story being told, but if you can't handle those two issues for whatever reason, this book isn't for you.

Those two things - both fairly deep in the book, with the child molestation around the 75% mark - aside, this was truly a solid, if dark, twisted drama that presents as one thing and then winds up with something completely different. One of the darkest books I've read in the past few years, but again, within the story being told, the darkness works well. If you're looking for a light and fluffy beach read... this ain't it. If you're looking for more of a "snowed in, want something that can absolutely consume me for a while" read (ala a deep winter read, when this book will be releasing in Feb 2021)... this is near perfect for that. Overall an excellent tale, with the caveats noted at the top of this review. Very much recommended.… (mehr)

This is a dark and twisting story that will keep you rapidly reading until the end. There is a lot of switching from present day to the past and sometimes it was difficult to figure out what time period we were in but overall it was a unique and powerful story.

Tara and Sophie are twins and helped each other through the problems in their lives. But Sophie is missing and Tara desperately wants to find her. Sophie is the brash and extroverted twin and Tara is introverted and doesn't want to cause problems for anyone. Tara is also seeing a psychologist to try to get help figuring out why she has no memory of the six months after their father died in a fire and she knows that Sophie can help. Can the doctor help Tara regain her memory of those 6 months and the memory of the trauma she faced growing up? And will she be able to find Sophie again - the one person that she knows will always protect her.

This is a great book full of twists and turns. Even if you guess one of the main plot points early in the story, keep reading - there's more surprises to come. It's probably one of the darkest books that I've read and enjoyed recently so now I think it's time to read a fluffy romance.

Thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.
