- Oriana Atkinson was born in New York City. She traveled widely, including across the USA and to Russia, England, France, and Ireland, and went around the world on a freighter.
Mrs. Atkinson was the author of eight books, two of which were bestsellers. Over at Uncle Joe's: Moscow and Me, published in 1947, was an account of her experiences in wartime and postwar Moscow over a 10-month period.
Manhattan and Me: A 1950s Love for New York City (1954) described the changes that had occurred in her hometown since her early life in Greenwich Village. She was the author of three historical novels set in the Catskills: Big Eyes (1949), Twin Cousins (1951), and The Golden Season (1953). She also wrote short stories, poetry, and articles for The New York Times and other newspapers and magazines. Oriana was married to Brooks Atkinson, the drama critic for the The New York Times.
