The book has a slow pace probably because of the simple plot as well as the plethora of Italian words that I was not familiar with. I got tired of looking up words in the dictionary. Since the story has just been translated into English I have to wonder if there is an issue with the translation or with the plot. However, the translator should not have left so many words in Italian. A few of these words were explained in the next sentence but most were not. When the story moved to Ignazio seeing his French lover once again, we had to decipher the French sayings.

We have all heard the admonition to writers to "show not tell." In Lions there is alot of "tell," especially in the first half of the story. The characters were two dimensional until the final third of the story where we see Ignazziddu take over the family business. The reader sees Ignazziddu is not up to the challenge of running the family business from his actions. We see him spending too much money and that he is a womanizer. Having never been interested in the business while his father was alive, Ignazziddu learned nothing over the years that would have prepared him for running the company. In the end, we see the business faltering. The story ends with the birth of his first child. A girl. I am presuming that this means the end of the family. I don't know because the novel ended abruptly with her birth.

I am not sure how to rate the book. I was bored throughout most of it but the ending was good. There were serious problems with either the writing or the translation or both. I will give it a 2 star rating.… (mehr)

I think there are different ways to read this book: with an interest in history, with an interest in the Florio family, and with an interest in how the human stories unfolded. I was interested in the latter. In this regard, two things are the most striking: - first, how appaling the women were treated from birth; - and second, how Ignazio, the bedrock of the family; and Giulia, the outcast, who were both immersed in the same society bounded by the same rules behaved differently from the others. I was mostly disappointed with Giuseppina, Vicenzo's mother. She internalized the patriarchy and allowed it to grow roots in her. The book pulls the heartstrings and at times feels like a soap opera but it is well researched and structured. I believe the main question is why are the Florio considered a remarkable family. They certainly beat the odds, had business acumen, amassed formidable wealth, married into nobility, built a powerful network of influence coming from very humble beginnings but by the end of the book it appears they built it all to themselves.… (mehr)

Era da un po' di tempo che aspettavo di leggere il prosieguo del primo libro della Auci. Un romanzo storico lungo, a tratti melenso, che mi aveva lasciato sentimenti contrastanti. Da un lato il carattere quasi agiografico del racconto, una scrittura quasi barocca, da romanzo di appendice. E dall’altro lato la forza della storia, quella della famiglia Florio che mi ha coinvolto. Insomma, uno di quei libri che non vedi l’ora di riprendere in mano la sera, nonostante gli evidenti limiti letterari. Il secondo volume, “L’inverno dei Florio” parte dall’affermazione di Ignazio Florio che trasforma Casa Florio in un gruppo di livello internazionale. Ignazio è un uomo tutto di un pezzo, ha avuto solo una sbandata per una donna conosciuta a Marsiglia da ragazzo, ma tutta la sua attenzione è per sua moglie Giovanna. Comprende le dinamiche dei rapporti tra impresa e politica, diventa senatore e acquista le Egadi. Si, proprio le Egadi, tutte quante, commercialmente per le sue tonnare, personalmente per trovare il buon rifugio per lui e la sua famiglia. La perdita del primogenito Vincenzo è un dramma anche per un uomo come lui nonostante, comunque, con forte senso di responsabilità continui a lavorare e a creare ricchezza. La famiglia Florio sostiene buona parte dell’economia di Palermo e della Sicilia occidentale, una sorta di baluardo rispetto alle istanze della grande industria del nord. Ma una veloce malattia lo porta alla morte e lascia un impero al figlio Ignazio. E, come spesso accade, il figlio non è come il padre e, infatti, il giovane ragazzo dopo aver sposato una giovane donna di ottima famiglia, Franca, non si assume la responsabilità delle proprie imprese e della propria famiglia, non segue le attività economiche, delega la gestione e tradisce continuamente la moglie. La vita dei Florio viene condotta nel lusso più sfrenato e anche i primi segnali di difficoltà delle attività vengono tralasciati, tale è la ricchezza della famiglia che Ignazio non intravvede la tragedia che sta per arrivare. Ed infatti in pochi anni tutte le attività vanno in crisi ed Ignazio inizia lentamente a vendere tutto; e a ipotecare le azioni dei gioielli di famiglia. Intanto la perdita di tre figli, tra cui l’unico maschio, allontana ulteriormente Franca da Ignazio; intanto, anche il fratello di Ignazio, Vincenzo, preferisce la bella vita alla gestione delle cose di famiglia. Inizia così una rapida discesa che si trasforma rapidamente in un vero e proprio tracollo che mette in discussione lo stesso stile di vita della famiglia e li porta, in pochi anni, a perdere tutto. La casa dei Leoni diventa un pezzo di memoria di Palermo e della Sicilia, ma scompare del tutto e con tutto. Come detto un romanzo un po' d’appendice, ma che ha la capacità di appassionare, nonostante i suoi limiti. Ma visto che un buon libro è un libro che si legge con piacere, onestamente va dato merito all’autrice di aver reso di pubblico dominio la storia dei Florio.… (mehr)
