Against the backdrop of the impending global pandemic, the story takes place in an isolated corner of the English countryside where the use of cellphones is extremely limited. In this setting, Caitlin has to navigate her own relationship issues as well as new relationships that she develops in a strange place. She has to come to terms with her inability to see what is happening to her until it is seemingly too late.
The book follows the limitations imposed by COVID on the world. There is a limited number of characters and their interactions are often awkward when trying to deal with social distancing. In addition, the isolation is increased by extremely limited access to phones and internet which becomes part of the plot twist that occurs in the story. It seems that access to these items are necessary to execute a rescue mission.
