Set amidst the Catholic and Protestant wars in Northern Ireland, historical romance author Baker (Nell) succeeds in crafting an emotionally charged political intrigue that informs while it entertains. Six years after witnessing her husband's murder, Kate Nolan and her teenaged children, Deirdre and Kevin, are still trying to overcome the horror of it all. Kate has immersed herself in her job as a Catholic civil rights activist for the British prime minister, Deirdre is a worrisome college student ever fearful and watchful, and Kevin has started to hang around with a drug dealing crowd. When Kevin is busted for possession, he's given a choice by Special Forces Officer Neil Anderson: become an informant or go to prison. Things take a darker turn when Kate learns that her husband may not have been the devoted husband and father she believed him to be; Neil forces Kevin into life-threatening situations involving terrorists; and Deirdre becomes infatuated with a Protestant student. Delivered with thoughtful exposition and flawless writing, this provocative book is built around Baker's personal experiences of Ireland, which lend her story a sense of immediacy and authenticity. Baker has carefully mixed fact with myth with fiction, and the several sub-stories set in various points of the past provide a wonderful scope of Scottish history. Each sub-story comes alive with the essence the period is known for, political turmoil included.

Unfortunately, the ending is riddled with problems. Some may be my personal opinion, such as the conclusion of the love story between the main characters leading the modern day plot, but others are flat out plot problems. The entire book hinges on a curse that is connected to Scotland's missing Stone of Destiny, and the resolution to this major plot point had holes all over the place.

If you want to get absorbed into Scotland, this book provides a wonderful exploration of four distinct eras. If you want a love story, there are four romances that are engaging, though tragic. If you want mystery mingled with fantasy, there's plenty, so long as you don't mind overlooking the flaws. Until the ending, this book was hovering at a 4.5 star rating, but the ending drops it down to a 3.

I really enjoyed Nell. It is a historical, contemporary and a bit of paranormal in one, taking place in Ireland. It has dual timelines, similar to a Kearsley novel. I only had a couple of minor problems with it: I still really don't know what issue compelled the historical heroine to appear to the young contemporary heroine starting in childhood, and an epilogue would have been nice.4.5/5 stars

Legacy was a pleasant surprise for me and kept me riveted. I did not want to put the book down. I thought it was very well done, with only a few minor quibbles. 4.5/5 stars
