Het eerste deel vind ik nog het meest interessant als de van muziek bezeten Basie in aanraking komt met The Blue Devils van Walter Page, een beroemde band in die tijd. Het lukt hem om mee te spelen en dat is de opmaat naar een positie in een nog grotere band, die van Bennie Moten. Het is niet makkelijk om daar tussen te komen want Basie is pianist en Moten, de bandleider, is dat ook. Toch lukt het hem en hij doet een voorspelling aan Bus Moten, Bennie’s broer, als ze naar een show kijken in het Regal Theatre in Chicago;
“You know one thing, Bus? Boy, one of these days I’m going to be down there onstage with my own band. “
Ook laat hij vaak zaken weg over zijn privéleven. Hij wil niets zeggen over zijn eerste huwelijk, over waarom zijn ouders scheidden maar zelfs als hij het naar zijn zin heeft moet u dat maar van iemand anders horen;
Then we hit the road and swung down to Richmond, Norfolk, and Raleigh, and came back to Philadelphia, and after that we headed west out of Rochester and didn’t get back until March. It was a lot of traveling and a lot of work, but we also had a lot of fun on that tour. I won’t get into all of that. I’ll let somebody else get all of those tales together, because that’s another book in itself.
Het boek maakt wel duidelijk hoe moordend het reisschema van een bigband was;
According to our files, we played four concerts in three days on that first visit to Australia. Then we headed back to the States after two or three days in New Zealand and a stopover gig at the Hawaiian Village in Honolulu. Then we worked our way back east from California, and in the middle of March we made our second QEll cruise. The in the middle of April we took off on another tour of Europe and England that lasted right on through to just about the end of May, and in that little space of time hit thirty-nine cities in nine countries.
Basie vertelt wel over de hartaanval die hij krijgt en de artritis die hem veroordeelt tot een soort scootmobiel, waarmee hij naar zijn piano op het podium rijdt. Hij zal tot op hoge leeftijd blijven optreden en kijkt in dit boek dankbaar terug op zijn leven als muzikant. De mooiste quote in het boek komt van hemzelf en die geeft goed zijn bewondering weer voor Duke Ellington, over hoe die altijd op de toppen van zijn kunnen speelde. Ellington liet zich nooit verrassen;
I know a couple of bandleaders who thought they had caught him on an off night, but that was a big mistake. Because when you try to take advantage of a situation like that, you’re asking for it. Because when he comes back up there on the stand, the red-hot number you worked up to so you could bring the house down, will be the one that he’ll use as his warm-up number! And he will play it for you as if to say, “Oh, is this the tune you mean?” Or he can play your theme song with so much stuff in it that you don’t want to touch it anymore that night.
(mehr)
