- In one form or another, Heidi Betts has been a storyteller for most of her life—whether entertaining her friends, working to improve her grades or attempting to get out of trouble. So it's no surprise, really, that she grew up to be a writer. She began her love affair with the romance genre in junior high, where she used to sneak romance novels into study hall when she should have been doing her homework, and it didn't take long for her to decide that she wanted to write a few romances of her own. Soon after joining Romance Writers of America, her writing began to garner attention in several contests, including the esteemed Golden Heart competition, which she placed in the finals three years in a row. Since selling her first book in 1999, she has been the recipient of numerous awards and stellar reviews. She is the founder of her local RWA Chapter, Clearfield Area Romance Authors #167.
Heidi lives in Central Pennsylvania with her family and pets. She has a soft spot in her heart when it comes to animals and has been known to take injured and homeless critters of just about any species into her home. The domesticated ones, she usually ends up keeping; the undomesticated ones, she nurses back to health before returning to the wild. When she isn't writing, Heidi can often be found reading or watching television with a cat (or two) curled up on her lap. Tangled Up in Love

Rival columnists Veronica Chasen and Dylan Stone are embroiled in a bitter and very public war in which they challenge each other to crazy feats such as bungee jumping and whitewater rafting. In the latest round, Ronnie finally has Dylan stumped when she dares him to learn to knit. That is until Dylan shows up at Ronnie's knitting circle with a counter-challenge - teaching him to knit. Soon the two have more than yarn wrapped around their fingers . . .
This book is simply adorable.
Ronnie and Dylan have amazing chemistry and their banter is witty and funny. While Ronnie initially comes across as acerbic and prickly, it is impossible not to empathize with her backstory once it is revealed. Dylan is sexy and smart and one cannot help but admire a man who is willing to put his machismo aside and learn to knit.
The secondary characters are a mixed bag, however. While Gage and Julie are very compelling (I've since read and enjoyed their book), Grace and Zach are not as appealing.
Moreover, the inclusion of aunt Charlotte's magical spinning wheel is unnecessary as it adds little to either the plot or characterization.
Overall, a wonderfully light and entertaining read.… (mehr)

Love Me, Loves Me Knot

Despite their divorce due to irreconcilable differences, Gage Marshall and his ex-wife Jenna Langan still have strong feelings for one another. So, when Jenna decides she wants a baby, Gage is the only candidate for fatherhood that she has in mind even if he is reluctant.

Jenna's actions at the beginning of the novel are inexcusable. Drugging, binding and "seducing" a man into having sex is rape, plain and simple. It does not matter one iota that he enjoys himself and he loves his ex.
Jenna's behavior puts a damper on an otherwise satisfying second chance romance. Moreover, Gage's revelation at the end makes his decision to end his marriage to Jenna seem childish and idiotic.
The secondary storyline involving Grace and Zach is uninteresting perhaps because neither character is particularly appealing and it is difficult to care about the disintegration of their relationship. Also, Grace actions are excessive and borderline criminal. Thus, I will not be reading the final installment in the series.

On the Verge of I Do

Events planner Kara Kincaid has had her hands full organizing her sister's wedding, a situation made even more difficult due to her crush on the groom, hotel magnate Eli Houghton. But now Laurel has called off the wedding, and Kara and Eli realize that their casual affection conceals a fierce attraction. Would a relationship between them work or drive a wedge between Kara and her family?
The premise is entertaining and the couple is engaging.
Betts manages to handle the elephant in the room, i.e. Eli's engagement to Kara's sister, Laurel, with aplomb as their relationship was one of convenience rather than true love. In contrast, Eli and Kara have sizzling chemistry, and their interactions are sweet and sexy. The only issue is the conflict at the end. Not only does it feel contrived, but Kara's reaction is very immature. Thankfully, it isn't too drawn out and all's well that ends well.
The most disappointing aspect of the book is the lack of development in the ongoing mystery. What little information is provided happens off page, and the reader is told rather than shown the details. Hopefully the next book will do better in the arena.… (mehr)

"All I Vant for Christmas"
I'm not a stranger to navigating prickly relatives during the holiday (just ask me how many serving platters we go through each year), but my family has nothing on Connor's perpetually college-age brother and sister. Jillian's handling of them was believable--reverse psychology for the win every time. The instant attraction between Jillian and Connor was amusing, as was their 'frank discussion' about the mechanics of human/vampire sex.
The inclusion of why Jillian's ex-boyfriend broke up with her felt unnecessary however and just tacked on to give her a reason to 'seduce' Connor. The ending was refreshing as it felt more 'realistic' than a lot of vampire romances; no eternal pledges of love, just acknowledgement that what they have is special and worth pursuing.
"A Vampire in her Stocking"
I had one major problem with this story, no wait actually two major problems. One was the manner in which Nick becomes a vampire and two is his reaction, not too long after, said change. I find it highly suspect that Angelina would do such a thing, even if it was in the best interests of Vivian and Nick. Since she seems more like one of the vampires who wishes to blend in and not create a stir. I give Vivian props for being so adamantly upset with Angelina for what she did, but what she did was just this side of ghoulish.
And then Nick's response wasn't much better. His initial response was called for and understandable, but a couple weeks later? When he learns that being a vampire might not be so bad if he gets to have rocking sex with Vivian whenever? Yeah. I'd think there would be more consequences of Angelina's actions, at the very least with his family? His coworkers? None of that is really explored, instead we get an angst filled tale of guilt and sex.
"It's a Wonderful Bite"
I'll be honest, I mostly skimmed this tale. I have nothing against the movie for which this is loosely based around, but this re-invented version was maudlin and needlessly dramatic. Add to it that Angelina as a mortal seemed stripped of all her common sense and this made for a forgetable, lamentable read.
Angelina mourns the fact that her lover of 80 years, Ian Hart, hasn't asked her to marry him. Its pretty obvious that until she approaches the subject with him (during sex) that its not a topic they've discussed before nor did she really seem to care until recently. We don't really get a good handle on Ian in this story either. Ian as a vampire only makes appearances at the very beginning and very end, and Ian as a mortal has some highly questionable moral issues to work on.
As a collection this was a letdown. The stories went downhill as they progressed and with the exception of the first one I didn't even buy into the romance.… (mehr)
