Ronald Bishop

The premise of the book is to explore the ways in which American culture has lost touch with scale, particularly as it relates to media portrayals. We go too big, too far, and too dramatic. Bishop discusses topics such as pronatalism, breast feeding, over-protective parents, schools and education, sports, addiction, food and eating disorders, and home improvement.

While I appreciate the author’s educational credentials, most of the book feels quite anecdotal and of limited perspective. He hops on his soap box quite often and makes broad statements that are not always substantiated by hard research. I do agree that our private lives have become more public with the advent of social media and reality television. However, I do not see how this corresponds to a lack of scale. I got the feeling that Bishop is extrapolating onto the rest of society cultural changes that he has experienced as negative.… (mehr)
