REVIEW: “My magic is always on. It’s not that I can recall everything whenever I want. It’s that I recall everything all the time whether I want to or not.” This was Grey’s curse while Ivy can’t remember things from day to day. Together, they battle insanity driven dragon politics. And perhaps because I get tired of politics in general, I found some of this book a little tedious. I have enjoyed this series and it should be read in order. There is an enticing ending that makes me look forward to the next book in the series. This is my voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

DESCRIPTION, NOT REVIEW: She can’t remember. He can’t forget.

Once a powerful warrior, Grey’s greatest battle now is with his out-of-control magic. What empowers him to remember everything also threatens to imprison him in his most horrific moments. He yearns for peace, but with the dragon sorcerer, the Handmaiden, missing, he has nowhere to turn. So, when someone ransacks the sorcerer’s chambers, he agrees to investigate, hoping he’ll find her. What he didn’t count on was having to work with an agent of the Dragon Court, who instantly captivates and soothes his writhing memories but endangers everyone he holds dear.

Tortured with a lack of memory, Ivy wakes each day not knowing who she is and having to learn again and again that she’s the servant of an insane prince. All she wants is freedom. When she’s assigned to the case of the Handmaiden’s chambers and encounters Grey, she realizes she can use his secrets to force him to help her escape… if she can just ignore how he makes her feel.

But they soon discover the Handmaiden has hidden a dangerous, powerful magic, and the first key to finding it has been stolen. Now they must put their desires aside and race against time, risking everything, to save dragonkind and each other.

Original and intriguing series
REVIEW: “An investigation that just so happened to require her to be close to Miller. That was so very very good, and so terribly terribly bad.” Detective Ryan Miller is a dead ringer for Eric, the human that stole Capri’s heart a century ago. Seeing him brings back such deep pain while igniting desire that exceeds anything she has experienced. Is Ryan her inamorato, her soul mate? Dragon law still forbids their relationship even in the unstable political chaos. Capri and her team fight both to find a serial murderer and to navigate the anarchy caused by an insane leader. It is this political mess that overwhelms the story. It is helpful to have read the first book, Immortal Coil, first. Shattered Spirits seemed to drag in places, maybe when it was trying to fill in the blanks to make this a standalone book. As a series, this is 5-star. By itself, there is still some confusion. I strongly recommend reading the books in order. It is a fantastic series, original and intriguing.

DESCRIPTION, NOT REVIEW: His love will set her free. Hers will kill him.

For centuries, Capri has used her magic to keep dragonkind a secret, living only for her job. A century ago, dragon law forced her to abandon the only man she ever loved, a human, and she swore she’d never love one again. So when a murdered dragon is discovered, Capri jumps to work, only to find the human detective working the case could be her dead lover’s twin.

Detective Ryan Miller has always known magic existed. It’s the only explanation for the visions of the future that plague his life and jeopardize his career, but when a vision shows FBI agent Capri Jones in danger, he knows he has to stay close and save her. Except the closer he gets, the more attraction sizzles between them, the more confusing the case gets, and the more he realizes Capri is keeping secrets. Secrets that once revealed could kill them both.

Shattered Spirits is the second book in the Dragon Spirit series.

Story was going well until I found the world-building that underlay was only half developed with glaring inconsistencies. The self control of the main character is at best flaky and at worst nearly non-existent - you don't wish for control - you express it, and with power like this in play, if you fail, you self-immolate, end of story. I really wanted to like this one
