If you enjoy B-movie horror, found-footage style, you're going to enjoy reading this. Let me just say, I think a better translator would help this book a lot. It's hard to stay in the moment as you're reading when words are used in ways or places that make no sense, and it's not just once or twice but fairly consistent. That aside, the descriptions of the environment and setting are top tier, and the picture painted is a vivid one. I can't say I actually liked any of the characters, but that didn't make me any less invested in the story, although until the gang showed up the first time I was wondering when the tension would ramp up. Once the gang crosses paths with one of the groups roaming around the complex, things got very tense. From there it wasn't so much a question of if they'd cross paths again, you just knew they would, and that it likely wouldn't end as well as it did the first time. The overall vibe of the book is b-movie found footage horror, all set in a crumbling Cold War era compound that has long since been abandoned. If that's the kind of chills you're looking for in your next read, then you'll want to grab this!… (mehr)
Urbex Predator is a horror thriller about a group of urban explorers visiting an abandoned barracks in Germany, and soon after, they start getting harrassed by a gang.
I liked how the barracks are based on real places, and I loved seeing the photos; it really made the story more immersive.
I wasn't super big on the pacing of the book. I felt like a lot was happening all at once, and it would jump around to different characters quite a bit, which made the plot difficult to follow at times.
There were also a lot of characters to keep track of, and I wish they were fleshed out just slightly more since it was hard for me to connect or care about any of them.
Even though Urbex Predator wasn't for me, I would recommend this if you're looking for a fast-paced read with a Richard Laymon and Jack Ketchum vibe.
The English translation comes out in February, and thank you to NetGalley and Xpresso Book Tours for the gifted copy.… (mehr)
