Ho sempre creduto nelle parole e nella letteratura. Sono convinto che la letteratura abbia il potenziale per provocare cambiamenti e per sfidare le strutture del potere.
La letteratura ha il potere di darci la libertà. Sì, è così.
Sono chiuso in prigione da anni, ma la mia mente non ha smesso di produrre parole che mi hanno portato oltre i confini, oltreoceano, in luoghi sconosciuti. Le parole sono più potenti delle sbarre del luogo in cui mi trovo, di questa prigione.
Non è un semplice slogan. Non sono un idealista, non sto esprimendo il punto di vista di un sognatore. Queste sono le parole di una persona che è tenuta prigioniera in questa isola da quasi sei anni e che è testimone di una tragedia straordinaria che si sta verificando ora. Queste parole mi consentono di essere lì con voi, questa notte.

Nessun amico se non le montagne non è stato affatto la lettura che mi aspettavo: pensavo che avrei letto il resoconto delle terribili esperienze di Boochani durante la fuga dall’Iran e poi nei campi di prigionia australiani, invece mi sono ritrovata a leggere una sorprendente analisi del perché ancora esistono situazioni e luoghi di disumanità come quelli.

La prosa di Boochani è stata definita surrealismo raccapricciante perché sembra realismo magico, ma la sua interpretazione della realtà (dovuta sia al non rendere riconoscibili le persone prigioniere delle quali parla, sia al costruire la sua riflessione in merito alla Prigione di Manus) unita al suo uso poetico delle parole la rendono un unicum in letteratura. Basterebbe solo questo a rendere questo libro degno di attenzione.

Ma c’è anche la sua analisi della situazione della prigionia e del sistema di accoglienza (sempre che si possa definire accoglienza). Sicuramente le modalità di analisi vi saranno familiari se bazzicate il femminismo intersezionale, visto che Boochani è consapevole di come quel sistema di sfruttamento venga replicato in altri ambiti, che devono essere tutti liberati affinché questi orrori non si ripetano mai più, da nessuna parte.

quattrocento anime perse in uno spazio ristretto
quattrocento prigionieri
che aspettiamo impazienti le notti

No Friend but the Mountains: Writing from Manus Prison von Behrouz Boochani

Surely destined to become a classic of prison literature in the company of Jacobo Timmerman's Prisoner Without a Name, Cell Without a Number and George Jackson's Soledad Brother among many others. Don’t neglect the translator’s postscripts, which elaborate on method and situate this book in the philosophical enterprise of which it is an element.

No Friend But the Mountains

I'm 10/12 hours through the audio for this but my loan just ended and honestly I've been slogging through it for a while so I'm going to DNF it here around 83%.

This book is all about the writing. The prologue talks so much about this aspect, and I actually found that aspect and learning about how the book was written and translated very fascinating.

Behrouz's story is obviously extraordinary and highlights the terrors of Australia's prison system and the way that refugees are treated. It's not a problem that's isolated to Australia, unfortunately. The writing of this is extraordinary.

But unfortunately I didn't love it like I wanted to. It was long. It felt long. I want to read a short vignette or essay from Boochani, but I felt like there wasn't actually super a lot of substance for the length that was here. I think for a certain reader though, this will work, and I'm unsurprised that it's won some awards.… (mehr)

No Friend But the Mountains

While reading this book, I began to get the same feelings I did when reading Night by Elie Wiesel. The thing to keep in mind is this is not recalling WWII, but recalling within the last few years and he is a refugee seeking sanctuary, but is locked on an island like a prisoner. He used texts and wattpad to write this. As of this review, he is still imprisoned. It is truly horrific.
