This book about Carmel, California, was first published in 1925. It lovingly describes the city's natural beauty with lavish prose, and describes the vivid art community with its many facets with an equally passionate tone. One might think it was for the intent of boosterism, but the book is open about how the 'old guard' of Carmelites is fighting progress tooth and nail as they desire to keep the city quaint and small. Judging by how I found out about the book in old Carmel newspaper ads, I think the audience is the people of Carmel itself. Self-worship is the goal, I think, but there's something charming and amusing about that. In any case, as a writer in research mode, such a book is a lottery jackpot kind of find.… (mehr)
