Library copy was due and I didn't finish nor care about going back to do so. Fine writing but her story of sticking with a bad boyfriend did not entice me.

Bosworth's writing is pretty good. I read this book about 10 years ago and Stix is reading it for the first time. We heard Bosworth speak at BAM during the Clift series in March 2010.

What can be said about Diane Arbus that would capture what her photographs do? Nothing really. Her street photography and portraits proved she was a beacon for the people on the outskirts and she was WAY ahead of her time. This bio is an intimate detailed account of her too short life in all of its intensity and daring. If you haven't heard of her and like disarming and sometimes grotesque photography, I encourage you to check her out. As a long time fan, I can say this bio put her art in perspective for me.

Excellent biography of actor Montgomery Clift which contained a lot of interviews with friends, co-stars and family members as well as listings of plays and films in which he appeared. Highly recommended.

I've always liked him, and I knew he was troubled. However, I didn't believe just how much and how deep it ran until this book. It's an amazing, amazing read!

I am not familiar with the name Patricia Bosworth. Yet, I am always in the mood for reading memoirs. I enjoy reading them as they allow me to get to know people from all different walks of life. That is what Patricia did in this book. Patricia did transport me back to the fifties.

I don't care who you are but it is sad when someone takes their own life. Yet, the more I read and got to become familiar with Patricia's family; I understood why her brother took his life. In fact, he was happier in death than in life.

Despite; everything in this book and what I have previously commented on, I honestly couldn't connect with this book on a deep, emotional level. In fact, this was kind of an unmemorable book. While, this book did not work for me, it might work for someone else.

"John Wayne, the Legend and the Man" supplies an appealing look at the larger-than-life iconic movie star who came to symbolize the American character in the minds of many people. This hefty 2012 release chronicles Wayne's life and career in roughly chronological order. It offers up hundreds of black and white and color photographs, movie posters and remembrances from co-stars and friends that present a rare, behind-the-scenes and altogether charming portrait of Wayne, his family and friends, etc. All in all, this book is a well-done and affectionate tribute to a cinematic legend.

I've rarely encountered a memoir that reads just like a novel, but Patricia Bosworth's account of her early adulthood in New York City does just that. With impressive honesty, she discusses the suicides of her brother and later her father, along with the abusive nature of her first marriage and the conflicts she felt between the doctrines of her Catholic faith and her own actions. All this makes for fascinating reading and a book I would highly recommend.

Bosworth really did her homework on Fonda. It was exciting to read about all the people she's been involved with, all her major life changes, etc. Jane Fonda is an icon.

After seeing some wildly disturbing photos by Arbus in a museum years and years ago, I purchased this bio to try to understand the mind that created them. Bosworth's book clearly presented the evolutionary process of Arbus' photography, and in doing so gave an understanding to the linear progression of thought some artist's work through.

A lot of Arbus's life in this that was new to me. It seemed though to be rather weighty at the beginning about her younger life in terms of facts and information compared to her later years which seemed to me to be glossed over through lack of information & in many instances mini bio's of people Arbus was associated with were used as filler. While Bosworth says at the start the family wouldn't talk to her for the book, there are a lot of quotes from various family members. I was stunned to read that Arbus's work extends into thousands & thousands of prints and most have not been published or seen and for whatever reason the family is holding onto those works. Bosworth mentions Diane's depression throughout and her subsequent suicide, but does not go far enough to any sort of resolution. There's a lot not said, or perhaps not known, although some portion of blame is assigned to her illness of hepatitis & toxic effects of medications and it would be interesting to hear other views.

A wonderful, insightful page turner about the life of this talented tourtured soul. He was a Movie Star and one of the great method actors to come out of the Actor's Studio. But more than that, he was a man with many faults, who hid his secrets from the world, but gave us his amazing body of film work.
All credit goes to the author because this still stands as the definitive "MONTY" biography.

Coffee table size book containing photos of John Wayne's life and career and released by the John Wayne estate. The book is well done with many never before seen photos although I wonder why, after childhood, there were never any photos of Wayne with his brother. Additionally, there is an error in the caption on page 198-199 in the photo from The Sons of Katie Elder as the names for Michael Anderson Jr. and Earl Holliman are mismatched as Holliman is pictured on the far right. There are tribute articles from Maureen O'Hara, Ronald Reagan, and Ron Howard, as well as a brief biographical introduction by Patricia Bosworth and a forward by Martin Scorsese. A must for any fan of the Duke!

This was a depressing book as Diane was a depressed person portrayed in this book. Though she had huge talent for photography, she did not seem to 'give herself enough credit'. Coming from a seemingly dysfunctional home, Diane 'made the best of her situation'. I personally did not agree with her morals, nor of the stated photographs she took. The author was quite detailed regarding Diane's interactions throughout her years.

Still the definitive Clift biography, with many primary-source interviews and a fascinating portrait of his mother and their deeply dysfunctional relationship. Overemphasizes the auto accident as the pivotal event in his suicide by attrition (he was in disastrous decline prior to that). Interesting and vivid cameo appearance by Clift himself, when Bosworth met him.
