Cowboy, hunting and fishing guide, folksinger, poet, essayist, and novelist, he’s written the picaresque Yellowstone Kelly historical novels, humor columns and essays on blood sport as Coyote Jack, and the Gabriel Du Pré mysteries, in part because “the Métis are a great people, a wonderful people, and not many Americans know anything about them.

Peter Bowen lives in Montana. He is a cowboy, hunting and fishing guide, folksinger, poet, essayist, and novelist. He is the creator of 'Gabriel Du Pré', master fiddler and occasional unofficial deputy in Montana.

Un excellent opus. Une enquête étrangement lente, entre plusieurs mondes.

Disclaimer: Peter Bowen, who died last week, was an old friend of my father's, and I spent some time around him back in the 70s. We sang, drank, and laughed. His hunting Labrador Retriever fathered a litter with my show-class Lab and had some really fine pups who were beautiful and brilliant bird dogs. But I never had gotten around to reading any of his books, though I see them on shelves in libraries all the time. I figured this was a good time to try one, and this one - the first in his Du Pre series - had gotten some appealing reviews.

I liked it. It took me a few chapters (but they're short) to tune my ear to the voice, but once I did, I rolled with it. Idiosyncratic, free-wheeling, thoughts and speech tumbled together. Peter was a good songwriter too, and spent a lot of hours sitting in bars, listening to conversations grumbling, muttering, guffawing, ebbing and flowing, and he's assembled that feeling here in a raw musical composition. He hadn't mastered plotting - the plot is almost afterthought, with a not-very-credible solution. I'll see if he got better at that. But the language, the imagery, the characters - down and outers, people saddled with pain and addictions yet sustained by the kindness and generosity of neighbors - and the splendid Montana landscapes that Bowen knew and loved make this a much better-than-average way to spend a few hours. Grateful for Hoopla through my local library to make these accessible while the "real world" is locked down!

Une enquête à la fois crépusculaire et lumineuse. Bien que le cadre ne soit ni l'un ni l'autre.

The cover stated 'A Montana Mystery Featuring Gabriel Du Pre.' I was intrigued.

The tale featuring said Gabriel Du Pré, is apparently the 15th edition of the series, my first encounter. It has little pinches and dabs of many different kinds of crime fiction: noir, love for location, engaging characters, implements of destruction. I've left some out I'm sure. This particular edition is not strong on plot ... but ... so what? Same goes for character development. It does other things so well that I only mention these typical elements of stories in passing.

A beguiling aspect of the story was the cast of characters from Kazakhstan. Bowen not only intertwined the personalities, he intertwined whole cultures. His own, Bowen's, love for the landscape, the weather, the wildlife is deeply evident and so, a part of the weave of the story.

I'll be reaching as far back into the series as possible for more. If you're looking for something different you might enjoy this series too.
