- Gordon Frederick Browne was an English artist and children's book illustrator in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Born in 1858, he was the younger son of notable artist Hablot Knight Browne (who as "Phiz" illustrated books by Charles Dickens), and was educated at Heatherley School of Fine Art and South Kensington Schools.
Browne worked in watercolor and pen and ink. He was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI) and the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA). He was an early member of the Society of Graphic Art and showed three works at their first exhibition in 1921. His first book illustration was for Ascott R. Hope's The Day After the Holidays (1875), and he went on to become one of Britain's most prolific illustrators, being particularly fames for his historical accuracy in his work. He died of heart failure in 1932.
