If you read historical fiction, like I do, because you enjoy being transported back to a time and place which differs from your own and because you want to immerse yourself in a different culture, outlook, and social milieu, you will find this novel challenging and not that enjoyable. The author, as many historical fiction writers like her, here imposes a 21st-century mindset onto the 17th century. So you will find a feminist "queer" tale with a protagonist who has modern outlooks on life, including topics such as slavery, race relations, male-female relations, etc. If you can suspend disbelief and just a want a rolicking good adventure, this is for you. If you want verisimilitude, you will be disappointed.… (mehr)
