This one is all over the place.
Lots of shallow clichées, shallow characters. Lots of unnecessary POVs.
This book is overflowing with unnecessary stuff that doesn't add anything to the story which makes the story feel very unfocused despite its generally fast pacing.

Just ok. Unfocused storyline. Thought it would be about being a US marshal. Then she's portaling to Ireland and into family drama. Then she's off-planet getting a dragon familiar. Then somewhere else on SWAT team, then back to marshal, but like a lone gun? Eh. Very scattered.

*hurridly returns it back to Kindle Unlimited*
I love the oriceran universe books, in fact, this is the first time I've rated a book in that universe 1 star.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I somehow finished this book but not without skipping some pages and eventually skipping to the end. Can I get some applause, please?
This book hurt my eyes, every word felt like I was trying to lift a brick, the writing was chunky and slow. Every page just FELT.LIKE.A.CHORE.
I also didn't particularly care for any of the characters at all and found the pacing to not suit the book, we get some tidbits of information about Atlanteans (Took you long enough)
Not enough to make me want to continue this series, unfortunately.
I appreciate the authors writing books in weeks but I think with more time, this book could have been perfected.

Note:
To the Authors, if you're reading this, please don't consider this as being mean against you.

Not as advertised

This is not truly a stand alone series. This series is part of larger universe of novels. That creates a problem for me. There is a subtle sense early in this book, the supposed first novel, that there is a deeper backstory that has already been published. The characters are too glib and comfortable.

Then they go to another planet...

I mostly like my magic on Earth, with maybe side trips to Faire or Tir Na Nog. When a character goes through a strange portal and instantly knows they are on another ‘planet’, you’ve first violated the rules as to what an individual knows and second stopped being Urban Fantasy. (I know, ‘sufficiently advanced blah blah’; that’s not urban fantasy, that’s a different beast)

I bought this expecting new and different series. It’s not. It’s not unique.
